Ok so I'm a newbie and need some help with what might seem like a very obvious question. I have a "J" reg HiLux 2.4 Diesel which I've owned for about 4 years. My memories not great but I seem to remember that soon after I got it I asked the garage to replace the timing belt while they replaced the clutch. Since then the old bus has done about 4,000 miles only.

Now then my T Belt warning light came on last week and is now always on. My question is this...could it be coincidence or is the HiLux sophisticated enough to suggest a timing belt change at 140,000 miles exactly ? If the engine's still running sweetly how does the warning light recognise an impending problem ? How can I check to see what state the belt's actually in ? is it a job for a slightly competent DIY-er. :o

Any sensible suggestions very welcome.

Many thanks

The light is reset using a thin stick or paper clip, you need to remove the rubber bung in ths speedo glass and press the button once.

Timing belt light is set to come on 60k mile intervals from the last time it was pushed.

You should replace the belt every 100.000km's or every 4 years....even when the engine runs smoothly....!!!

....Saves a lot of money...
