Unlocking The Navi Whilst Driving

before you all start pointing me to youtube, I have tried all the things showed on the US toyotas for the navis. to access the "secret menu" and unlock the navi so that i can use it whilst driving, well ALL functions...

has anyone figured out how to unlock the European Navi unit from TOYOTA?

This is the single reason I will not buy another TOYOTA, it is my car and I decide how i use my car, NOT TOYOTA!!!, and anyway i always have to accept the T&C that come up at the start of the drive, so that exempts TOYOTA from any liability, WHY o WHY will they stop me from using and ejoying my car how I want to use it...:angry::angry::angry::angry:

RANT over, any help appreciated...

Quite simpley it is put in place to potentially save your life or someone elses life.

Using and adjusting it whilst driving is considered to be DANGEROUS and you could be seen as driving without due care and attention if you had an accident whilst setting your satnav when driving.

These systems are designed to be safe and foolproof......................so don't be a fool.........be safe!

But why cant you have a passenger change it for you? Toyota are just playing far too safe imo.

So what you are saying then is that every other car owner, from Rolls Royce to Proton who have a Navigation unit that do not block all the functions whilst driving are fools and unsafe drivers?

Common!, it is not as basic as that, and you know it... I am sure you are saying this to wind-up my 2nd rant ... ;)

As I say it is not as easy as that...otherwise you should not be able change CD on your car, operate windows etc etc etc ...

I agree with you on the safety aspects, and like everything there is a time and a place for everything...

Speed kills ... NO it doesn't ... otherwise Lewis Hamilton would be dead and fighter pilots also... on its own it doesn't kill.

Speed Kills when speed applied with one or more of the following...:

1. Driving above your capability ( this includes driving skill, attention span, reflexes, health etc...)

2. Driving fast on unsuitable roads (narrow lanes, wet surfaces , bad surfaces, blind corners etc... )

3. Driving fast in an environment with too many uncontrolled variables... ( pedestrians, traffic , juntions etc )

That is what kills, and a combination of speed and any of the above makes you a fool and UNSAFE

As I say there is a time and a place for using equipment like this... and it is not right that Toyota take a blanket approach and limit how I use it...as I say no other make does it, and it is because they recognise that at the end of the day it is the drivers responsability how he drives...

UNLESS.....Toyota agree that because they control how I use the car, they are then liable for any accident I am involved, as I was driving in their safe and non-foolish car...

in which case I am happy not paying insurance and not using my navi whilst driving....

(TOYOTA UK if you are reading this ... and answer would be welcomed!!!) :spiteful:

Rant number 2 over... :!Removed!: ^_^

I gather there is no one out there that knows how to disable it then...

I gather there is no one out there that knows how to disable it then...

Easy Tiger..................calm down..................I did not say that to wind you up!

I stated that Toyota designed the system to be safe and foolproof...............I never called you a fool.

Operating and programming your satnav whilst driving is IMO on a par with using a mobile phone ........which is illegal, as is driving without insurance.........(I hope that your comment about insurance was not serious)

Motor manufactures like Toyota must cover themselves in todays "Blame culture" world.................All drivers should act with responsibility and consider the consequences of not complying with inbuilt safety features that the manufacturer offers them.

Why not contact your local Toyota dealer to see if he will disable the safety feature...................I doubt that he will agree to it.

Why have you gone into a totally unconnected rant about "speed kills" ?.....................calm down and chill ;)

out of interest how old is your car?

I believe that all functions are available on the satnav in my 2007 Avensis whilst on the move & that certain earlier models are freed when using later discs (there was a firmware update on them as well as updated maps).

The "speed kills" and the "cannot use your navi whilst driving" ... is in the same category in my view...regarding you duty of care whilst driving... and in the same category as using a handsfree set...you still need to concentrate on the call, finding the number etc... so all these things will affect your driving in different ways depending how skilled driver you are, road conditions , environment etc...

I know you were not calling me a fool...( you just wanted to give me a way of releasing my rants... Thanks ;) )

I am just very P!ssed off with toyota, because as I say, I have seen a whole load of systems on different makes, or even Tomtoms garmins etc... none of them put locks whilst moving... and Why do I have to click the "I agree" terms and conditions screen everytime i drive off to get the navi started, surely I am agreeing to drive in a safe manner, that is Toyota's way of clearing themselves and showing a duty of care, the same as other makes do.

that's what i cannot accept...

I have gone to the dealer and they gave me the "computer says ... no..." and cough at me with a a blank stare...response...

I have an 07 Auris

What grates me even more is that in US there is a "back door" to get round it... but they have abviously "patched" this for Europe.

rant# 3 over .... this is quite therapeutic... :rolleyes::lol:

what is clear is that I won't be buying another Toymota unless I get this sorted...

it seems odd that it's fine on an 07 Avensis but not on an Auris - you would think that Toyota would try to use common parts.

What's the model no of the satnav (I have TNS 700)?

Problem is while you are playing with your sat nav and driving (no different to being distracted from a mobile phone or reading an A to Z) your attention is taken off the road. While you are looking at your tiny screen, some old granny steps out, a kid walks in front between two parked cars or someone in front brakes suddenly, the list goes on. It’s a good safety feature, and if it stops idiots behind a wheel from not looking where they are going then I’m all for it.

But the passenger can do the changes right?

You can't do any changes while driving? Sometimes when you're in the traffic jam you have plenty of time do do something there. If i had navi i would be annoyed too

Yup I'd be pretty annoyed if I'd payed Toyota price for a sat nav that was locked.

We already had a perfecty good law for people whose driving is affected by fiddling with stuff ... including mobile phones ... called driving without due care and attention. Now we have a ludicrous situation where it's illegal to sit in a lay by in the drivers seat and use a mobile phone, it's illegal to hold a mobile phone with no Battery in it that can't possibly make or recieve calls while driving a car, it's illegal to use a mobile phone while stuck in stationary traffic for 2 hours ... but hey you can use a radio transmitter/receiver, hold a bag of spuds to the side of your head, play the piano, wrap your left foot behind your right ear ..... but use a mobile while in the drivers seat under any circumstance whatsoever ... that'd be no.. It's yet another ill thought out and quite possibly unnessesary law serving to bring the law into disrepute.

AGREE, no one says otherwise, including me. there is a time and a place for usage.

The point is ... who or what gives Toyota the right to make decisions for me,

Are they the LAW?

Are the a recognised safety enforcement organisation?

Are they a recognised moral standards group for driving etiquette?

NO! hence why i want my navi unlocked and I want to make the decision how I use it and if I want to be an idiot driving ( no offence taken form your comment by the way...)

the same as I can do in any other makers car and navi.

Don't you think it is a reasonable... ? Otherwise it is getting a bit too much like big brother watching you, if a non-legal entity starts dictating how to conduct yourself...

(You've all got me so wound up with this, I am drafting a letter to toyota HQ and UK and JAPAN... ;) )

Heidfirst, thanks for the information, I will check the model of my navi once i get home and then go to Toyota dealer and challenge them...

(I assume all the software updates you mentioned where done legitimally by toyota dealers etc... )

The latest disk 'unlocks' the Sat Nav ;)

EXCELLENT!!! :thumbsup::yahoo:

So either they have now changed their "safety standards", or they have realised the error of their ways...

and I am certainly going to have words with the dealer who told me " we don't do that...."

whilst I refuse to pay 150 euros for a new disk ( when every single road around me is being changed and will not be completed until 2010, and i am not too bothered about the fact it now maps eastern Europe and has a few more petrol stations and MC Donalds on the maps... )

this proves THEY CAN unlock it, and it has to be and admission that this was enough of an annoyance to customers ... but they have cunningly added as an "extra feature" to the new map releases to try and encourage more sales...

So I am now asking Technical services to provide me with a fix for the lock ALONE, I hope they can do it. It would certainly restore my faith in Toyota...

My biggest gripe with the sat nav is the fact it does not use a full postcode even my 4 year old tom tom one does that.

LOLOLOLOLOL

IMMA BUHY A CARZX WITHOUT TESTSDRIVES LOLO!L!O!L!OL!!!!

Also, on the RAV4 atleast, the important functions you would need to use on the move, like detour or something you can. Which I thought was pretty fine. AFAIK it's been like this on Lexus cars for ever really, even the new IS-F has it. Passengers changing it! :D It wasn't me gov! IT was my passenger :D

Still, atleast they've offered the choice now so you can use it completely unlocked while driving. :)
