Avensis 01 D4d Vermont Injection Compensator?

Hi folks

I am new to this forum. I had always wanted an Avensis and in 2004 I bought my lovely Y Reg 2001 D4D Vermont and was loving it. She did a lot of miles for me. I bought her with 30K on the clock and as she stands she is up to 145K.

Over the years she has given me trouble, mostly i assume because of the high mileage I give her. 2 sets of Calipers, 2 windscreens, 1 rear windscreen, many many brakes etc, but last Wednesday driving along the motorway at approx 90mph she lost power and started throwing out black smoke which alternated with white smoke. Altho she is just about due a service, I checked the oil and she was indeed very low so I immediately put some in.

As I had to work on Thursday, I drove her again - 37 miles each way - to work. She continued to act the same so I took her to Toyota. On Friday they called me with the news that she was having problems with her injection compensator(I think that's what they said - I am not very engineering minded) and that it would cost approx £1900 to fix. Along with the fact that she is due a service and she needs new brakes, pads and discs(I never could understand why the brakes always seemed to go so bad, never on any other car I had did this happen), my total bill will be well over £2700.

My Avensis is only worth £2500 if even that.

So, I am hoping I might get some advice here. I am tempted to scrap her and would welcome any advice on how to do that - never have before. Or if anyone can recommend an alternative to spending this amount of money I would love to hear that too.

hello declanbyrne

welcome to the TOC

please give some preliminary replies, as follows:

- 30k --- have you been provided with service history from the seller?

- 30k -- have you serviced her once purchased? if positive then please list all jobs performed;

- check with advise what do you have in the coolant expansion tank and what is the colour of this liquid;

- i can only deem you still have not repair/adjust fuel injection system -- correct?

- when you can observe both black and white smoke? in more details;

- when all injectors have been last repaired/adjusted/changed?

- when EGR valva has been last services/cleaned?

- how's the engine started? smoothly or you'd crank it more?

- when all filters have been changed?

Thanks + come back

Igor

- 30k --- have you been provided with service history from the seller? - yes she has a full service history, with Toyota in all but one service at 28K

- 30k -- have you serviced her once purchased? if positive then please list all jobs performed; - yes she was serviced shortly after that

- check with advise what do you have in the coolant expansion tank and what is the colour of this liquid; - whatever is supplied by Toyotal

- i can only deem you still have not repair/adjust fuel injection system -- correct? - yes correct

- when you can observe both black and white smoke? in more details; - When i am driving there is white or pale smoke and every so often it turns black

- when all injectors have been last repaired/adjusted/changed? - never as far as i can recall

- when EGR valva has been last services/cleaned? - I don't know what this means but I assume whatever needed doing was done by toyota

- how's the engine started? smoothly or you'd crank it more? - starts fine, no problems
