Avensis 01 D4d Vermont Injection Compensator?

Hi folks

I am new to this forum. I had always wanted an Avensis and in 2004 I bought my lovely Y Reg 2001 D4D Vermont and was loving it. She did a lot of miles for me. I bought her with 30K on the clock and as she stands she is up to 145K.

Over the years she has given me trouble, mostly i assume because of the high mileage I give her. 2 sets of Calipers, 2 windscreens, 1 rear windscreen, many many brakes etc, but last Wednesday driving along the motorway at approx 90mph she lost power and started throwing out black smoke which alternated with white smoke. Altho she is just about due a service, I checked the oil and she was indeed very low so I immediately put some in.

As I had to work on Thursday, I drove her again - 37 miles each way - to work. She continued to act the same so I took her to Toyota. On Friday they called me with the news that she was having problems with her injection compensator(I think that's what they said - I am not very engineering minded) and that it would cost approx £1900 to fix. Along with the fact that she is due a service and she needs new brakes, pads and discs(I never could understand why the brakes always seemed to go so bad, never on any other car I had did this happen), my total bill will be well over £2700.

My Avensis is only worth £2500 if even that.

So, I am hoping I might get some advice here. I am tempted to scrap her and would welcome any advice on how to do that - never have before. Or if anyone can recommend an alternative to spending this amount of money I would love to hear that too.

Hi,

With the mileage on your car, I would not spend any more money on it, I would put that money towards a new car.

At the end of the day it's your call. Even if you got it all fixed for £1000, I would still scrap it.

You could put it in to an auction & get what you get for it, which could be as little as £200, but it would be off your hands, at least.

You could also check the forums for information, as it's not the first time Mr T has got it wrong, reading a lot of posts.

On my Avensis, my horn was not working, which was down to the steering wheel squib. They advised it would cost £380 to replace it with a new one, otherwise it would fail the MOT.

I did some exaustive searching on here & found a simple fix, that cost me £20 at an auto electrician.

I'm not saying that your situation will result with a simple fix, as I don't believe that is the case. but you may find some information helpful.

Cheers

Hi

To be honest, I agree with you. Even if I could push the bills down to £1000 it would be more than I am prepared to spend. I am well used to Toyota and their expensive costs. E.G. Headlamp cost £168+VAT with Toyota - £42 on eBay / Wing mirror £142+VAT with Toyota - £40 on eBay.

This is not my first Toyota and my family have been driving various models for over 30 years. But it's a shame she has died this way. As I type I am about to run out the door to work (as I was when I posted yesterday) so this evening I may have some time to look more closely at these forums to see about scrapping/auctioning her - never had to do that before so all new!

Thanks for your reply.
