I'm considering buying an ex-demonstrator iQ from a Toyota main dealer. They seem to have around 2,000 miles on the clock, be around 6 months old, and be priced around £1,500 less than the new price.

Positives

  • Save £1k - £2k on list price
  • Instant availability

Negatives

  • No choice of colour/options
  • Driven hard by lots of different drivers
  • 6 months warranty lost
  • Interior may be a little shabby

Please can you help me with my dilemma - Do the positives outweigh the negatives? Is there anything I'm overlooking? Has anyone had a particularly good or bad experience buying an ex-demonstrator?

As long as you like the colour, for me its a no-brainer, given the opportunity, the money saved equates to the immediate depreciation that most new cars suffer as you drive off the forecourt. But thats just me :)

I have bought 2 ex-dems.

In 2005 a Honda FRV - save about £4k off the new price. Was 3 months old and about £4k miles on it.

Last year bought an ex-dem Smart - 57 plate. 4 months old and about £2.5k miles.

Both cars ran well had no issues with them what so ever. Traded the FRV in for the Smart as didn't need 2 big cars anymore and only traded the smart in as I so wanted an IQ - lol. Otherwise would still have now.

As long as you have test driven it and are happy then go for it !

Demo cars usually have a better spec, for example the one at my dealer has sat nav and leather seats so if you were making a saving on these plus instant availabilty then it seems a very good deal. Alot of people had to wait MONTHS to get these optional extras

if you are considering this, I would seriously give the interior a check over.

As I've mentioned many times on here before, the interior plastics are dirt cheap, and scratch with the slightest cause to.

If you don’t mind a second hand car then go for it.

Just to update on this. In the end I decided not to go with an ex-demo because I really wanted a Silver iQ and the prices being asked for 1-6 month old silver models was just ridiculous! I ended up with a better deal buying new - what happened to cars losing so much value as soon as they are driven off the forecourt?!
