I have been running a 1999 Volvo S40 SE 2.0 for nearly a year as a 2nd car. It's used for the school run and short trips and at least 90% of the time it is being used on 30mph roads. I bought it off a neighbour for £850 and its been great. Having reset the trip computer when I bought it, it has averaged 27mpg, but the last couple of months I reset the computer again, started driving as if petrol cost £10 a litre, and managed to get up to a dizzy 31mpg! This, coupled to the £190 tax and higher insurance, plus the fact that the car needs hundreds of pounds worth spent on it before winter, has led me to order an AYGO.

I have liked the AYGO since it was launched, and although I thought about the other 2 B-Zero cars, I think the AYGO is much more stylish. And not so Pug-ugly. My sister has owned 2 AYGOs so I know all about them.

I took my Volvo to 2 local (rival) dealers on Thursday, with the intention of getting the best deal I could. My car is worth £800 on trade-in (I've seen the Glass's guide), it is not old enough for the scrappage scheme. Long story short - They valued the car at £800 which I thought was fair. I then explained that I was going to another dealer to see what deal they could offer me. The manager gets involved. He shows me some paperwork which shows the dealer margin on an AYGO is £279. He says the best deal he could offer is £1150 for my car, which I feel is excellent. I haggled for some mats and a tank of fuel, but then went to the 2nd dealer. They valued my car at £400. I explained to them that I'd been to a rival dealer and been offered £800. That I'd haggled up to £1150 + fuel + mats. They said that it was a mega deal, no way could they match it, don't know how they could do it, suprised the manager still had a job etc.

Next day I phoned the 1st dealer, and without mentioning what the 2nd dealer had offered, asked if he could throw in a glovebox lid (£68). He said he could cover the cost from somewhere so I went in on Saturday and ordered a Platinum, which should hopefully be delivered in September. I think I had a great deal, and am looking forward to picking up my AYGO.

Now that’s how you haggle! Well done  How much is it going to cost you to change?

Nice deal, take a pic of the glovebox when you get it as i think its the darker varient.

Cost of change? Thats simply the list price minus the £1150 trade in isn't it? Don't worry, the dealer didn't push the list price up! I'm pleased as I definately got more for my car than it's worth plus the fuel, mats & glovebox lid. I'll try and put some pics up when I get it.

Long time for delivery, shame really.

September? *****.. I was waiting for my Aygo less than 2 weeks.. Or it was actually waiting for me ;)

I thought that only povetry spec Aygos take longer to be delivered. Toyota dealers had Platinum ones sitting in their backyards and ready to go when I was buying mine.

I'm not a patient person.. I wouldn't wait that long :P

The scrappage scheme (and similar schemes across Europe) has led to an unprecedented demand for small cars. The Aygo, C1 & 107 are amongst the most popular, and are all built in the same factory. So I guess they are busy. I'm patient and don't mind waiting.

Good haggling! You should bet getting one of the first of the 'new' Platinums then...

Sounds great - especially if you have it all on paper! Cheers!

Ordered my Aygo Saturday June 20th, finally picked it up Thursday September 17th. Loving it so far. Only downside was a recall to test the rear seatbelts on Friday although the garage offered me 10% off a service to cover the fuel costs & inconvenience.
