Prius Price Rise In July?

Just been in the local Toyota dealer, with my Dad, who were trying to sell him a new Prius T Spirit. As the negotiations faltered after they only offered him £11000 for his 2 yo Prius (13000 miles), trying to stop my Father from walking out, the salesman warned him that he would have to order quick as the price will be going up by about £500 by the end of July.

After all the press reports patting Toyota on the back about not charging any more for the new one, seems strange to now decide to up the prices.

Of course this could be a general Toyota price rise of course.

I thought dealers wanted to sell new cars!!.

£11,000 for a 2 year old Prius seems a joke.

I have been thinking about changing my 2 year old T Spirit next year for the new model. The dealer will have to give me a better deal than your Dad was offered if he wants to sell me a new car. I am not surprsed your Dad walked out.

Seems stupid to me to raise car prices in this recession or is Toyota the only car company making big new car sales in the present climate?

He actually paid 21k for it originally (maybe the metallic paint was the extra), he traded in a 3 yo 1st gen prius with 20 odd k miles on it....and got £12000 for that one(with a slight scratch down the side of 1 door.....kiddies cycle was the likely cause).

TBH, I wasn't impressed with his 'salesman' technique, I got the impression He was trying to sell him a 'specific' car. Once my Father decided on the 'pure white' he went away and came back to say there was actually a 'pearlescent white' as well.....but straight away advised him not to bother with that as it was another 350 quid extra, not the sort of thing you'd expect from a salesman really. Also no mention of the 'options' such as the 'solaroof' which my father was actually thinking about getting(he has a small dog and is wary of leaving it alone on sunny days).

Somewhere there is probably a pure white T spirit on board a ship, heading for the UK with 'reserved' tag on it. :P

He knows that if he went for the solaroof, he wouldn't get it by 1 aug anyway, the salesman just assumed, without asking, that he wanted it by then......they actually initiated the interest by sending a letter......which stated they wanted to offer him a good deal for his prius......with no mention of wanting to try and sell him a new one.

Parker's Guide is what it says a guide. It is not necessarily the price a good salesman will give for a car. A car in excellent low mileage condition with full service history should get a very good part exchange rate.

Dave from what you say I think your dad was treated very badly.

My immaculate Prius has very low mileage and has leather upholstery and side bars. It has metallic paint and has had the special paint and leather upholstery protection. It has a full set of Prius mats and I think it is worth a lot more than £11,595.

If Toyota want to sell cars and keep customers their dealer's salesman will have to do better than the treatment your Dad received.

Face it....the Salesman was a plank, and seeing a potential sale walking out the door, threw in the 500 quid increase to try and entice your dad back to buy straight away. I wouldn't believe ANYTHING a salesman says unless I see it in writing signed by God...an even then I would be wary

Well, my opinion is, that now, due to a recession, it is a very bad time to sell relatively new used car. Relatively new meaning up to 4 to 5 years old car. Whole car market has been hit, not just the new car market. Due to pricing incentives for new cars, also used cars have dropped in price signifficantly. So you can end up loosing more for your used Prius than you are willing to.

It is the same all around the Europe and even in the USA.

Now it is good time to get rid off older cars, as resale values of them were less hit (measured in money) and pricing incentives for many new cars are great.
