Heavy Pinking Under Load And Hot.

We tow a folding camper on aregular basis.

On a recent trip to the Gower the engine was making a sort of clattering noise under load. I assume it was heavy pinking due to the heat, the load and fact that I had just put petrol into a mainly empty tank.

Normally we do get a tappety sound under loud but this was much louder.

Put more fuel in and some redex petrol treatment in on the way back and it stopped.

The car had new spark plugs 10K ago and runs fine with no oticiable loss of power.

Is my assumption right ? Is this just pinking caused by the heat and maybe a dodgy batch of fuel?

Problem seems to have gone away.

I would look at the dizzy,

spark plugs and leads.

Take the plugs out,

look at the tips - they should tell the story if ur engine has problems.

Hi Peter, i think you are spot on with your assumption and i would suggest you stick to branded fuel or one you find that suits your car (not wanting to open that fuel debate again) but that is my opinion. I have done hundreds of thousands of miles in my service van and found a massive difference in petrol over the years, Esso was the best in every way, MPG, pulling power etc in a fully loaded vehicle.

The only thing i would suggest is to drop down the gears a bit more as this will take the load off the engine and transmission saving long term damage, the ignition timing may require retarding slightly but if you say another batch of fuel cured it then leave well alone or get it checked for peace of mind.

Regards Pete.
