Son's Ill

Yay :yahoo: It is good news to hear that your son is on the mend

The trouble is that, as you say, your wife and you appear to be showing signs of the flu.... not good :(

At least you now know that it is not as bad as first suggested a few months back  Its unpleasant I am sure but I guess all you have to do is follow the advice and all will be better in a week or so.... good luck

Yeh its brilliant to see him up and about again , and so soon , there was and still is so much media hysterior as regards swine flu , so naturally as everything unfolded at the weekend we were beside ourselves with worry .

The nurse did point out that some people may develop quite severe flu symptoms , but the vast majority should recover quite quickly

Absolutely delighted to hear the good news about Daniel

Not at all happy to hear that your wife & your good self are now exhibiting the symptoms :(

Take care of your self, Bali. Asthma & flu are not a good mix. In your case, make use of your Doctor if you have any doubts.

Good luck & hope the dose passes quickly & without any complications

I am very sorry to hear the news balli hi - at least your young lads condition seems to be improving - however im sorry to hear that yourself and your wife are now showing symptoms - hopefully you will recover okay.

Its worrying that the school didn't seem to take better precautions - youd have thought that with recent cases at the tour destination that the school would have decided to pospone - ive seen school tours been cancelled/posponed for less.

I hope Balli hi and the family get on okay - its a horrible stressful situation to be in.

Best wishes anyway

Ireland takes positive action.

Not a good sign that we haven't heard from Bali Hi since he reported that he suspected he was getting the infection :(

Irish | World | Business | Weather | On this day | Week in ViewMore HeadlinesIreland HeadlinesGovernment to provide free swine flu jab

04/07/2009 - 14:08:47

A free swine flu vaccination is to be offered to the general population in the coming months, as part of a major plan to avoid the worst affects of a global pandemic.

The HSE plans to acquire over 7,500,000 doses of the vaccine, at a cost of almost €90m.

The jabs would be administered by GPs or through a network of over a hundred swine flu clinics and will be ready by the autumn.

Twelve new cases of swine flu were confirmed here yesterday, bringing the total number in Ireland to 63.

Hi guys

Well the good news is that the little man is recovering well his temperature has come down , he's out of bed and has been eating well , although its only been a few days he seems to be over the worst .

My wife has been in contact with some of the other parents , and they are reporting the same with their children , one parent also told her that out of all the year 6 pupils at the school , only 15 are currently attending, and have been grouped into one class .

The bad news is that both my wife and i , are begining to show some symptoms , the thing is daniels test result has not yet returned , we were told it would take 2 full days , so it kind of leaves us in limbo as regards getting tamiflu prescribed for ouselves , we rang NHS Direct and explained the situation and described our symptoms , the nurse confirmed that what we described was the onset of flu , and basically advised us to keep our fluid intake up and take a couple of parasetamol every 4 hours , she also repeated basically what my GP said as regards Tamiflu , in that it will not cure you of swine flu but will lessen the effects and assist in speeding up recovery, this could explain my sons speedy recovery , she also stated that in swine flu hotspots , and she gave london as an example , that most health authorities are now treating swine flu no differently to ordinary flu and simply advising people to follow normal flu procedure if they contracted swine flu , i.e plenty of fluids + paracetamol , and were not prescribing tamiflu at all .

Not a good sign that we haven't heard from Bali Hi since he reported that he suspected he was getting the infection :(

Hi vic

I've not been too well , been laid low for a few days , still feel like crap at the moment.

My wife and i have been given a bit of a run-around by the health authoritie's regarding my sons swab result , the Health Protection Agency ( HPA ) are insisting my GP should have recieved the result , and my GP is insisting that he and the surgery has not recieved the result , niether will they , as the HPA should contact us direct , my wife has been on the phone wednesday thursday & friday but we just keep getting sent round in circles .

In the meantime we have learned that 2 of the confirmed cases from my sons school trip were sharing the same room as my son , however that fact is still not good enough for the health authoritie to prescribe tamiflu for me and my wife , because in their words we are not showing enough of the symptoms , and they just won't give out tamiflu " willy nilly ".

My daughter incidentally has showed no symptoms at all , and remains uneffected . ( She's gone off to the wireless concert at hyde park this evening )

Around about tuesday my wife and i both developed a sore throat and began feeling unwell , i spent a couple of days mostly in bed with sore throat , head ache , neck pain , burning eyes , slight fever , however by friday morning , i actually started to feel better, but by friday evening my sore throat returned , and got steadily worse untill i was coughing and wheezing , practically all through the night , i rang the out of hours surgery thismorning explaining everything again from my sons school trip & confirmed cases of swine flu , to my current symptoms , the doctor said that my symptoms did not sound like swine flu, so i should go along to the out of hours surgery at queens hospital and be examined by a doctor , because from what i described he thought that i was developing a chest infection , probably bacterial , so i went along saw a doctor and was prescribed amoxicillin for a bacterial chest infection , all he did was listen to my chest, took my temperature & blood pressure , in his oppinion i did not have swine flu because my temperature was near normal .

So thats where i'm at at the moment , the doctor did say that , however, should my temperature go up ( above 38 ) and i develop nausea or diarrhea , ( classic swine flu symptoms ) then i should not hesitate to call back .

No worry's mate , hope alls well with you & yours too .

I would'nt say that alls well with me though , i have developed a chest infection , and don't feel good at all , i'll be back round to see my GP first thing monday , and demand he takes a swab so as i can determine once and for all wether or not i have been infected with swine flu , as said in a previous post , i saw a doctor yesterday , but all he did was prescribe anti-biotics , and advised that i should make sure i take my preventer inhaler , morning & evening , of which i am doing in any case , the thing is if i do have the virus then anti-biotics will do absolutely nothing to help me recover, i just want to know one way or the other , for peace of mind . Its also really frustrating that we have been unable to find out the result of my sons test , it seems the NHS is in disarray at the moment and are unable to cope , inundated with people coming down with flu like symptoms , when i was at the hospital yesterday people were queing into the corridor because the waiting room was rammed with people waiting to see a doctor , the majority seemed to be parents with sick children , at one point a nurse came into the room and announced that " if you have come here because you have flu like symptoms , then you should not be here , the advice is that you should stay at home and seek advice iether from NHS direct or your GP , by coming here you will only succeed in infecting others , and also hospital staff , thereby causing staff to be off sick , and we are stretched as it is already " she then asked people to raise their hands if they were here because they suspected they have swine flu and proceeded to hand out information leaflets to all those that had raised their hand ..... practically 3 quaters of the room , she then requested that they return home and follow the advice given on the information sheet , naturally this was not recieved too well by many who had turned up with sick children , if this is what its like now , and the pandemic is only just starting ..... well  draw your own conclusions :angry2:

HI

I had refrained from actually naming my sons school , or any of the infected pupils , however , one of the first three confirmed cases has a very famous uncle , and anything remotely connected with him normally makes the news , http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11...-swine-flu.html

Regarding my son daniel , we were contemplating sending him back to school today as he is back to his annoying best  , but he still has a bit of a cough , in which case there is a chance he may still be contagious , so decided to keep him off , apart from that he's fit and well .

How are Mum & Dad pulling through ? :doctor:

Apart from a sore throat and a few aches and pains , my wife is more or less ok now , my daughter remains so far totally unaffected , i am still not well , although my throat has eased and i am not coughing as much , my chest feels quite sore & congested , as said previously , i have been prescribed antibiotics , not sure if its doing anything though , i still feel generally unwell , also keep getting really hot flushes , when i got up this morning , i thought i was going to be sick , when the feeling passed i went back to bed , by doing so i missed my chance to make another appointment with my own GP for today , so i'll try again tomorrow .

Just wondering if anyone clicked on the link , then clicked on some of the other links , like this one http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11...nts-warned.html

Its being reported that some parents are holding swine flu parties :rolleyes:

Well , i can report today that iam both happy and angry , happy because we are now in possession of my sons swab test result , and as i suspected all along its been confirmed POSITIVE , at least now we can rest in the knowledge that daniel has had the H1N1 virus and has come through ok , and has hopefully built up some immunity should the virus mutate and return in a more severe form in the winter time as some are predicting .

I'm also very angry that its taken so long to obtain the result from the HPA , and indeed we owe great thanks to our surgery practice manager , who made a series of phone calls yesterday , and finally managed to track it down , basically the person who came and took the swab failed to write my GP's name on the relevent paperwork , which resulted in my sons result being sent to the wrong surgery , the implications of this unnecesary delay , are that my wife and i were denied the tamiflu drug , which certainly in my case could have resulted in me fighting off the infection sooner & possibly prevented me from developing a chest infection as is now the case , i'm also angry at the fact that despite various phone calls to the out of hours surgery and NHS Direct , and explaining that i am asthmatic and showing flu symptoms , that nobody would take responsibillity and prescribe the anti-virul drug that could have helped me , and also despite seeing a doctor at the hospital on saturday , who boldly claimed that he thought my infection to be bacterial and not swine flu , and said that taking a swab would not be necessary , all this because of the absence of a test result that we should have had at the latest last wednesday .

So now the position is that i saw my GP a couple of hours ago , and he has prescribed the tamiflu drug for me , but not my wife ????? , i explained that i am currently a third of the way through with the amoxicilin tablets prescribed at the hospital , he's telling me to continue & finish the course as well as starting on the tamiflu straight away , i would have thought that he knows what he's doing , but it does leave me a little worried over taking both drugs at the same time.

I would also like to add that when the swine flu first hit the headlines , i was one of the first to mock & predict that it would never happen , maybe a few cases and thats it , it just shows how wrong you can be sometimes , however i also hope that people can take heart from the fact that in practically all cases , should they contract swine flu , they will recover quite quickly as in daniels case , its really only the very sick with underlying health problems , that may go on to develop complications , and its probably because i am asthmatic that i have developed a chest infection , although this is probably not a complication , i sincerely hope the tamiflu can help me get it off my chest ( no pun intended ) sooner rather than later .

PS, apologies for the long winded post .

My grandson was at the local infirmary last night vomiting high temp ect, he was sent home last night he is now back this morning and been admitted, we fear it could be the swine flu thats hitting lots of areas now.

Hi M8

That sounds pretty much like the onset of swine flu , as high temperature & vomiting are a characteristic of the virus .

I sincerely wish your grandson the very best in a speedy recovery , as said in my last post ,please take heart from the fact that people in the main are pulling through fairly quickly ,

Hi Balli

I work in Romford & one of my team was off for four days last week with a chest infection - but - her Dad had flu the whole week & her boyfriend has got swine flu. Unfortunately she is coughing all the time and I sit right opposite her & she came back in yesterday (plus we have 2 pregnant people on our team, with another 2 in other area's of the office). Last night I was all achey driving home from Romford & felt really dizzy with a bit of a sore throat. Now tonight I'm feeling it all again a bit worse, hopefully I'll fight it off but it's not nice at all. It's not just me who's feeling like this either, another girl who sits next to the one with the cough infection felt the same as me!

Anyway good to hear things are improving at your end.

Thats not good news Blue

It would seem that the virus is starting to take a grip in our area , don't your employers have a policy regarding swineflu , the moment my wife informed her boss that our son may have swine flu , she was told to stay away for 7 days after my son showed the first signs of infection , then she was told to stay away this week as well after she informed them that she also was showing symptoms during last week .

The swine flu virus is highly contagious , and can be easily spread by coughing alone , and the fact that pregnant women are being exposed to possible infection is really worrying .

Anyway don't hesitate to contact your GP should your condition worsen , in the mean time make sure that you consume lots of water , at least 2 litres a day , i have been advised this a couple of times , when speaking to nurses on the NHS Direct helpline , all the best blue
