My belt with new tension unit cost £150 fitted by an independent diesel specialist. I'm told more often than not tensioners fail which causes belt to fail, but hydraulic Toyota tensioner looks much more robust than last Ford spring loaded tensioner that I changed. As long as hydraulics don’t fail, any body know where pressure comes from is it engine oil pump?

This shows the tensioner;

However, without looking closer I'm not sure if it is just spring loaded with oil damping or oil fed. Clearly the spring is very strong without any oil pressure;

When I did my 4.2 it was spring loaded with oil dampener. As long as it is within the tolerence it doesn't need changing. Mine was fine so stayed.

swapped mine about 6 months ago(4.2 D4D)the original belt and pulleys etc looked brand new still.I changed the lot as we always do.The job time for timing belt replacement on a D4D is 2.7 hours and the intervals are 60,000m or 6 years
