D4d "misfire" Effect...

Hi all.

Wife keeps complaining about the car (86k' 04' T-Spirit D4D) having a flat spot. Says she'll be driving at 70, back off a bit, then go to accelerate again but it has no power. Has to change down or come off the gas & back on again to get it to clear. Also accelerating hard creates a bit of smoke. Cant say I've really noticed before mind though. I have tried to get it to do the same but cant although I'm sure it did once. Car seems fine in other respects, MPG is ok, power seems fine, pulls well enough. Other thing I've noticed that haven't really noticed before is a hiss when accelerating hard, is audible from within the car & with the window open.

Is worrying as were off to Cornwall in the thing on Wed.

Just wondering how a blown turbo will manifest itself ?

Also, looks like a service might have been missed before we bought it. Schedule calls for replacement of Fuel filter, could this cause it ?

Has just had a service but it was just an interim one. (Oil + filter basically)

Servicing schedule also refers to cleaning / inspecting the carbon canister ?

An idea as to what this is would be useful.

Reading about the EGR recommendation further down, an idea where this will be on our Verso as the pics shown differ from mine.

Cheers all.

A blown turbo would give no power and lots of smoke, the fuel filter is due every 40k and a blockage can lead to lack of power. The EGR valve could be sticking as this is a common issue on Diesels used in urban conditions, a good thrash could sort it out for a short period of time.

Is the hiss a hiss or a whistle?

cabcurtains...Its definitely a hiss. It might have been there before but my senses have become alert for every noise & rattle since the Wife expressed her concerns.

The car does a daily fast commute (70mph for 20 mins) so is getting a good run regularly.

Apart from this issue car seems fine.

Maybe the hiss is just a sign of mileage, if you have no warning lights and she is still driving fine could it be motoring paranoia? ;)

motoring paranoia

I think you may be right. Took it out tonight, with the Wife, & I could not get it to replicate this misfire / hesitancy.

Got her to drive & she said "right, its doing it now" so told her to floor the throttle & away it went.

I think she might be confusing what I consider to be just something symptomatic of modern diesels, as in a slight delay if you feathering the throttle. We have a couple of D4D Avensis's on our works pool fleet so I'm going to see if I can borrow one tomorrow lunchtime to see if thats the same.

Well its got worse.

Managed to limp back from Cornwall though.

The Toyota dealers reckon its either a leaking inter-cooler pipe or the injectors.

Diagnosis...£65

New Intercooler Pipe...£136

New injectors...£1500

Obviously they're replacing the pipe first.

I'm beginning to regret ever buying the thing. Should have bought something with cheaper parts 5yrs down the line...!!!

86k and 5+ yrs old, is it unreasonable that the car might need some money spending on it?

Common Rail Injectors are horrendously expensive on all makes of car and wont last forever, this is why Diesels more expensive to run than petrols when you do under 17k per annum as the parts are so expensive. Modern Diesels are superb for power/torque emissions etc, however once they get older they can cost big money to maintain.

If it makes you feel any better when i got out of a Diesel Focus with 43k and 3yrs old that needed new injectors which were price around £1200 mark.

Regardless of this i would still have a turbo diesel on a large car as you need the torque to pull you down the road.

Hi.

I guess your right mate.

Its done a fair few miles now so a bit of outlay is not entirely unexpected.

In every other respect the car is great, starts perfectly, returns a good 42-45mpg & at 1600kg makes an excellent caravan tow-car.

I'm just hoping these injectors are ok as a £1.5k bill will certainly see it being part chopped for the V70 Volvo I wanted!!!

Dont be suprised if they are on the way its quite common on 2.0 D4D's, getting out now could be a plan. Just bare in mind if the V70 is a D5 then it could suffer from the same issues if the mileage is over 50k and is out of warranty. I dread to think how much a set on a 5cyl Diesel would cost!! The engines do sound nice though :D However as far running costs go a newer Verso makes a lot more sense, funds dependent of course ;) As you say the rest of the car is fine.

Hi

£1.5k seems about right for the diesel injectors having just had mine replaced, although somewhat disappointed on a car with 65K miles not yet 2 years old.

At least the dealer cleaned it for me.

Hi.

Looks like the problem is now fixed.

It was indeed a split inter-cooler hose, buried somewhere under the Battery box.

Quite a large rubber pipe.

I'll post a pic later if I can.

Dont know how it became split, will retain the old one to repair if the new one ever goes in the same place.

Cost £77 for the hose & another £50 for fitting at Toyota World, Tamworth.

And they washed the car.

Dilemma now is whether to trade in while the going is good...

Shame because the rest of the car is fine.

Well, apart from the leaking windscreen anyway but that now has a crack so will be replaced soon also.

Hi

Good news, glad it wasn't too much.... I wouldn't bother trying to repair the hose, the pressure within it on full boost will rip apart anything you try, just bin it!
