Auris 1.6 Auto

Hi There.

My dad is currently looking into cars to buy when he moves abroad and he has just driven an Auris 1.6 rental. He seems to think it was quite good when it was moving but what i'm here to ask is:

How does the clutch work in the Auto's?

Whenever it went to change gear there was a slight delay (like the old electronic clutches did in the smart cars!) then it would change gear and away you go.

He quite liked the car as it was quite nippy for a little car, as he normally drives round in a 2.5 V6 cavalier AUTO (the auto is a must due to back problems)

Anyone got any ideas to help me out, I know a lot of you won't have auto's but someone who works for toyota might still know how they work.

Thanks

DAMN - after days looking i found what i wanted.

Quote from a test review!

We drove the 2-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol versions, the latter equipped with Toyota's MultiMode manual-automatic gearbox.

The MultiMode 'box takes a little getting used to, but once we got our heads around the fact it isn't a normal automatic, it could be driven smoothly.

Flicking the gearstick into 'D' for city driving is a wise move, but for the steep roads on our Catalan test route, we used the steering wheel-mounted paddles to shift gears.

Unlike an automatic, where you keep your foot on the accelerator until you need to stop, MultiMode requires you to lift off as you would when driving a manual.

We've tried these kinds of gearboxes before, with varying results, but the fifth generation version in Auris is just about the best yet, leaving behind its jerky predecessors.

On the move, our MultiMode-equipped 1.6-litre handled well, with positive-feeling steering and plenty of grip.

Sorry mods I guess this post can be deleted now.

I would certainly have an extended test drive as MMT can take a lot of getting used to.I hated our 1.4d4d for a while but now it is gone and we have a manual when I get to drive it I miss the MMT(I have a full Auto Mazda3 which is a fantastic car).

The wife now also is quite nostalgic about the MMT

Seems to generate either love or hate on this forum.
