Gen 5 With High Emmisions

I have a Gen 5, 1992 Cabriolet, which has failed the MOT on emmisions. The garage 'think' it needs a cat, Lamda sensor and water temperature unit but Toyota quote over £600 for the cat alone!

It burns very little oil for a Japanes car incidentally and is low mileage so i don't think there is an issue with the engine.

My repair manual shows a 'Three Way (Rear) cat, does this mean there is a 'Front' cat as well? the garage certainly thought the cat was at the outlet manifold and i have a seperate diagram of a vertically mounted cat in my manual but not sure if this is for my car?

There has been a rattle in the vecinity of the outlet manifold for a while, does anyone think this could be the broken cat interior or possibly something which has come loose connected with the emmisions control system?

Any advice gratefully appreciated in advance.

Jonathan.

any issue with your lambda sensor will trigger your "check engine light"

you should notice your car will be harder on fuel, poor idle. hesitation etc.

as your cat brakes down you will hear that rattle you mentioned , and yes they are very expensive - i would shop around the breakers for one

but the choice is yours.... if your "check engine light" is on check what fault codes may be stored.

Thanks for that.

The car sounds and drives perfect and the fuel consumption is normal.

I have been told that my car does not have the facility for a diagnostic, i.e. they can't plug a diagnostic computer in to it. Is this correct?

Still wondering is anyone can tell me about the location of the cat or cats? is there a vertical one at the manifold before the exhaust system starts as well as one further back?
