Just had the Rav 4 Sport W reg year 2000 2 door saloon in at the local Toyota dealer.

MOT and interim service - thankfully it passed the MOT but they mentoned a fw problems.

I have noticed a slight occasional bump when changing gears but it isn't really noticeable if I let the clutch out slightly slower - the wife says that it seems normal to her !!

Anyways. they said it had "clutch judder" and it needs a NEW clutch at £702. 76 !!

Any ideas how long the clutch could last us before it gets to be a problem ??

We only do about 100 miles a week town journeys not motorway.

how many miles are on the car mine has a bit of clutch judder that you notice more on cold morning mine has 80000 but it might be the rear motor mount but i dont think its a problem unless you have no drive to the wheels. you could adjust the pedal travel its just a couple of nuts and a pin from what i remember.

Think that this may be a similar problem to that experienced by Bothy, i.e. differential(?) mounting bushes. He was looking for some polybushes but don't know if he has the problem sorted yet.

If the clutch is knackered, then you'll know - from the position of the pedal when it engages.....as has been said.

Clutch judder in the good old days was an indication of oil contamination on the clutch plate.

The clutch on the 4.1 is generally an engine out job, hence the price. It can be done in situ.

The suspension bushes get soft after about 80,000 miles - and the rear diff mount when it goes soft allows the diff to rock back and forward causing a clunk or perhaps the sensation you're getting. Its worth checking the rear diff mount - if the car was MOTd, then the guy should have picked up soft suspension mountings.

As regards polybush type bushes, I bought 2 sets from a supplier in USA who either went bust or closed down their phone lines. I'm still arguing with the credit card company to get my £65 back.

I can do you a three in one clutch for about £120, it is an exchange type so I would need your old unit sent back to me

PM me for more info

I agree with bothy, if the clutch is US you will know or at least suspect. Keep in mind that if you look hard enough you will find faults on any cars but looking at these reports of the clutch and the sump leak I would treat them as advisories or nip to a good local indy and ask for a second opinion. I'm not knocking the dealer but it sounds like he is taking the note in the front of the handbook - "your Toyota Centre will keep your car just like new" literally.
