Any Ideas About This Tyre Mess ?

Any ideas in this problem ?

Our front near side tyre loses about 2 -3 lbs in pressure every week - sometimes maybe 4lbs - I have been topping it up every week or so as it affects the ride .

Anyways Toyota says the valve is ok but it needs to be re-sealed and all 4 wheels need wheel alignment as there is UNEVEN tyre wear .

They quoted £80 just for the wheel aligning and said the local Quickfit would be cheaper for the re-seal.

Anyways Quickfit said £30 for re- alignment but they said to go back to the place that re-furbished the alloys as they would probably re-seal the tyre cheaper than them !!??

I went to the Alloy workshop and they said they would sort out the problem for about £33 = I took him to mean they would re-seal the tyre when he said they would sort it out !

Does all this messing around sounf feasable to you guys.

Should I just keep topping ou the air pressure OR is it a potential danger when we start going on longer trips during the school holidays ???

remove the wheel and pour dish water (clean water with a good squirt of washing up liquid) between the tyre and wheel and look for bubbles, sometimes on older alloys you get corrosion under the paint which lets air out. i know a place which sorted one out for a tenner. you could also get a inner tube put in which will solve this or any other problem that it might be

I have a pal who had this problem on a 4x4. The tyre fitters unseated the bead on the tyre, painted around the seat with something that looked a bit like underseal ( don't think it was though ), then reseated and rebalanced the tyre. No problem since even though the alloys are looking pretty down at heel and are 13 years old. Cost £10 including balancing.

A re-seal should cost between £12 - £15, if they were recently refurbished perhaps whoever done them will do them free (thats if they refitted the tyres)

As for wheel allignment, at £80 I would think they would either be doing a full Geometric check/adjust or 4 wheel allignment, as standard front wheel allignment (aka tracking) will baisically just set the front toe settings.. this should only cost around £25.

It is better to get the tyre fixed as opposed to just topping up the pressure, although you have been told its the seal there could still be a small nail/screw or other foreign body in your tyre, also... you can damage the sidewall of the tyre if you keep running it with too little pressure. Wheel allignment is something I would recommend is checked every 6 months, so if it hasn't been done for a while it won't do any harm getting it looked at.

As far as I am aware inner tubes should never be used on alloys as they can burst. I think it might even be illegal for road use but this could be wrong. Check it out with a reputable tyre centre.

You need to get the tyres re sealed. It only cost me three squid a wheel at my local tyre depot. It's basically just a coat of black rubber based sealant. Failing that if the wheels have been refurbished take them back and complain.
