Is that engine lean burn too? can't quite remember. However if it is, ya wanna check the spark plugs etc. Also check for pipe blockages etc, or even pipes that aren't there! Has it been like that since the re-build? If so then maybe they should be lookin at it?

Could be one of many things fabian. The lean burns ahve an extra set of butterflys in the inlet manifold. Check that the connector has not been dislodged (under manifold). If you get really naffed off and are desperate, I have been advertising a brand new lean burn engine in the For Sale forum. Regards

the ecu from the doner engine was destroyed so no i could not change the ecu.my mate hade it on his machine but while he feels it when he drives it shows up as perfect.he thinks that it could be the 17"wheels(205-40-17)and that chipping it will give me more power but it may noy solve it

i'd ignore your mate.. he's talking twoddle.

They're both the same engines right? Both lean burn or both 1.8/1.6? Please say yes..

Its 99% down to ECU differences.. it sounds like the fuel map is different for the two engines and/or timing differences due to lean burn.

ya both lean burn. will another ecu from another engine do the trick?if so how much and would it be easier to get one from uk than here in ireland?

if theyre both exactly the same engine you need to get onto toyota and ask if there were any differences with engine sensors, ecu etc between the two years.. ie sometimes they will have a better ECU for improved mapping, or the new engine will have an extra sensor for some reason.. if the two dont match then yes you will have problems.

Ring any toyota dealer and ask there, or ask for the toyota UK technical helpline number.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had this kind of problem with my first gen avensis 1.6 non-vvti. I had connected some electronical stuff. Like radar, neon and extra gauges. These things were all few by the same ground and the same remote + wire. So that everything goes on if you turn on the key. The earth cable of the lights from the gauges was loose, the + was still connected. My car drove like a wreck, allmost stalled when driving at low speed (parking etc.). Below 4000 rpm it did nothing. Above 4000 rpm all power was back instantly. I first thought that my fuel filter need to be replaced. But after 2 days i reconnected 1 ground wire from the gauges. Problem solved. Car drove like before.

Don't know how this was possible, and where the interference took place. The problem never returned again. Maybe you could check if all ground wires are connected properly. Maybe bad ground someware on the aftermarket electronics.

I hope it can help you out, success.

Greetings Sander
