Roof Mount Cycle Carriers?

Anybody fitted roof mounted cycle carriers recently? Or any better advice than the Halfords website . . . ?

Gotta buy a bike to keep up with my 2 year old who looks as if he's trying to beat the land speed record - it's the only way I can think of keeping up with him without looking like the knackered 45 year old that I am.

ps the lad in Halfords broke the news that the Thule systems are about £80 a pop per bike

& around about £100 for the cross bars and locks . . .

Thanks in advance

Hmmm My daughter progressed from a push bike to a horse.... Now I have to keep up with that...:eek: still keeps me fit :lol::lol:

If you have a tow bar fitted the best bet would be a tow bar rack... as these are easier to get the bikes on and off...Look at this type HERE but then do a eBay search to find the cheapest...

Putting bikes on the roof of a RAV is fine if your 6"+ but if your smaller then the initial lifting of the bike to get this into the rack can be fun...Mate has a Hyundai Terracan 4x4 and getting his bike on the roof of that is fun....

You can get the racks that use a bar and pulley type system... it hangs over the side of the car then you push the bike and rack up onto the roof... but your gonna pay lots of money for them....

If you go for Thule have a look at http://www.skidrive.co.uk/ Bought the roof bars for a Vitara from them and they were the cheapest place by miles - and VERY helpful. ;)

Thankfully my daughter is not at all keen on horses . . . shoes yes

The main requirements wouldn't necessarily be affected by cost, as long as I can fit the thing on and it can't get nicked very easily - though the pragmatist in me says, it's Scotland you're only going to use this twice and it'll probably be snowing next week!

Think I've got the height thing covered so no problems there and we don't have a tow bar, so roof bars should be the easiest option - phoned a couple of internet based suppliers and still no real progress or calls back . . .

You're right they are considerably cheaper - where's me phone!

ooohhhh :o :o did not know about this place.... and yep they are cheaper than anyone else....:thumbsup:

When having the bike on the roof... watch out for the low height restriction bars in some carparks, as a friend off mine found out the hard way...at least he got the convertable BMW he's always wanted.... :P :P

Fitted the Thule system - now the "wee man" wants to sit on the bike while it's on the roof . . . boys, honestly . . . though I've got to admit the thought crossed my mind too and it looks like a giggle . . . wonder how much weight the roof bars can support?

It can't be any more dangerous than the plans Ryan Air has for allowing passengers to stand to save money . . . you just can't make stuff like that up!

I assume that Ryan Air will be allowing passengers to stand INSIDE though............................

Knowing very little about bikes (them things you have to pedal to make 'em go) I paid very little attention to this but having just had a browse I suspect there may have been some very hurtful suggestion that I could somehow be associated with whippets............

.........well I guess I'll just take my sheep home and sulk ;):rolleyes::baby:
