Well this morning; me and my dad were conveying to the service station (Toyota) for the cars to get serviced (duh), with my mum inbetween us. On the way up a hill i noticed that my car was pulling quite alot so i as I was coming down the hill I turned down the music and the car was heavy revving! Coming up to a roundabout I had to slam on the brakes to try and get the car to stop.

There were no mats and my foot wasnt on the pedal.

So i eventually got it to the garage still revving and half a tank less than when i left the house 3 miles before i gave them the keys and got the bus.

Anyone had anything similar?

That’s scary, never good having a jammed accelerator pedal, never heard of that before. Need to change your name to Sandra Bullock!

Posted

Yeah i had the image of the movie lol!

Any update on what caused the problem Vicky?

Posted

Yikes, scary stuff!

Did you try kicking the pedal to try and 'unstick' it? Sounds like the throttle cable might have gotten stuck (Unless the Aygo throttles are electronic!)

I must admit I have a slightly morbid curiosity of what the cause of the problem was too...!

Sounds scarey. Never happened to me (touch wood) but I was a passenger in a Capri (a few years ago) and at one point the driver said "hang on" and actually leant foward and reached down and grabbed the accelerator with his hand and pulled it upwards to unjam it! I am not suggesting that you, or anyone else tries that. Keep us posted on this Vickey please!

That's pretty scarey. Glad you're OK.

Don't mean to be harsh here, but when I learned to drive I was taught to dip the clutch when stopping. Are you on an Tip/Auto or something? (even then, I thought the auto essentially did the same when you brake). Sorry, but I'm a bit confused as to how this can even happen

Yes I did dip the clutch etc and the car did stop yet the car was still heavy revving!

Kicked it several times

Still not a clue!

Ive been at T in the Park all weekend so! lol!

I'm sure Mr T can sort it with some WD40 down your accelerator cable

I have noticed that in the service records for my Rav4 the previous owner complained about accelerator sticking, Mr T`s verdict No fault Found, possible carpet mat?????? I better watch out too.

Hi, glad u r ok.

Appreciate Im new and you're on 400 posts but I u don't mind me saying, you should get some advanced driving lessons

You were, I believe, approaching a roundabout, trying to stop but the throttle jammd open. Nasty and a brown trouser moment for sure.

With hindsight, puttug the car in neutral or dipping the clutch and slamming on the brakes would be the right thing to do. Modern engines won't overrev themselves so the car won't blow up. When stopped, switch off the ignition, hazzarda on and gather your senses.

Don't drive off with an obvious mechanical fault, you could hurt u or someone else.

I would also suggest grabbing the handbrake was panic and an odd choice. You have abs on the car, so slam the brak pedal to the floor. Really push it. It won't break. Let the clever computer stop you as quick as it can. Locki g the rear wheels via the handbrake will have increased your stopping distance and may have spun you right round and backwards onto the roundabout.

I appreciate I sound annoying, but get some driver training. It wi reduce the panic next time something starts to go wrong although we all hope that doesn't happen.

...bit worrying!

Never had a pedal jammed on me before...but have heard it happen.

IIRC there was a guy with a merc or a bmw on the motorway who got a jammed throttle -- car accellerated upto 155mph or something daft like that...police cleared part of the motorway until it ran out of fuel....he then got done for using his mobile phone and speeding! hahaha...

Anyway - if it turns out to be the throttle cable i would get a whole new one fitted - just incase!

just lift the pedal up with your toes to bring the pedal back up.

when you get home wd40 the frig out of the pivot on the inside of the car up near the bulkhead.

i cant imagine toyota doing anything more than that lol.

Caused by an non Toyota accessory so I am told, somthing to do with an amplifier somebody fitted badly!

Posted

Indeed it was! How on earth did you know that? Surely thats breach of confidentialty?

I havent been on recently. But yes that it what caused it! Ampilier cable was incorectly fitted therefore fell behind the accelator causing it to jam.

I'm slightly confused by how you found that out; without even knowing me.....

Tekyns has approx 5 hours left to explain how he knows these details on I'm on the phone to Toyota to ask who has been in my customer records.

The person lives in Surrey (england) and I'm in Glasgow (scotland) approx 450 miles away how does he know this?

Data Protection Act has been broken with major consequences

Fair enough he knows but I want to know how and why? Even due to something so little.

Thank you tecnys for doing your civic duty and letting us know of the potential pit falls of poorly installed accessories.

Hopefully, through you pointing this out, somebody in the future may be prevented from having a serious accident endangering themselves and, more importantly, endagering other people.

No doubt weevicky had her fingers poised over the keyboard to do her civic duty and let the forum know what had caused her dangerous ordeal so that we would all know that 1) the problem was not intrinsic to the Aygo and 2) to be careful how we fit accessories and route cables, etc.

Seeing that "weevicky" is anonimized on the forum and that it is in the public interest to have information regarding safety issues,I think weevcky's concern regarding data protection is null and void.

Once again,thank you,tecnys.

Yes, my car has recently suffered the same problem.

Mine is the semi-automatic version, and is now accelerating on its own.

It's as if the acclerator isn't returning once you take your foot off it.

And no, there's no carpet or mat getting caught.

I guess we will all wait now for Teknys to tell us the real reason in this case too

Blaming the mats seems to be an easy excuse though sometimes is the cause. I think its wishful thinking on Mr T's part to hope its a simple problem to avoid a bigger and potentially costly warranty job if parts are replaced that turn out to be fine but also a way to flog £40 set of official mats.

Cynical maybe, but I am getting niggled now that my car is potentially dangerous and its not being taken seriously enough.

Erm,the original poster and grahamsmythe have both indicated in their posts that carpets were NOT fitted.

Perhaps there is more than one cause for this kind of problem.

We have not heard anything more from the OP so I asume her problem was correctly diagnosed and corrected as she has not been back on this thread subsequently. It is only an assumption,so I could be wrong.

Turns out indeed it was NOT THE POWER CABLE THAT CAUSED THE PEDAL TO STICK

It has happened twice since then; I refuse to go to toyota after the ******* service.

I ended up on the top of a large round about on the busy bypass near missing two police cars

andeven after the the whells were still spinning in the mud...

So thanks to the "few that gave ignorant comments blaming me" and my amp cable :P

I thought none of the manual gearbox cars had the problem?

Paul.

That's what i thought Paul, mine is a manual and is not affected by the recall

As far as I knew, it was a MMT throttle by wire problem for the UK Aygo recall, which wouldn't apply to the manuals, but its not to say that WeeVicky hasn't stumbled across ANOTHER issue with 'quality'.

Either way, her problem is of great concern if its dangerous, even if it is a 'one-off' and if there is corporate neglect somewhere then I guess there's a legal case to be made.
