My Garrett turbo blew in April! I was only turning out of a junction at low speed when I heard a sudden clunking noise followed immediately by a howling/whining noise and a loss of power.... I knew immediately that the turbo had gone! I stopped more or less straight away (no smoke) and on close inspection could feel that one of the front blades was twisted and broke (see pics) and that there was a bit of play in the shaft bearing! After a five hour AA relay back to Warrington from Scotland I decided to leave it alone on the drive until I decided what to do? (and how to keep the cost down!) A few day's later my local garage had a look at it and advised that a recon turbo was the cheapest way to go, he also advised that debris from the blade could have entered and damaged the intercooler! (IC) He new of a local place in Widnes where the Intercooler could 'soak' for 24 hours in a chemical solution to dissolve any particles that could damage the IC or related parts! A few days later (and after an oil & filter change) he had sourced a recon turbo (none Garrett) and fitted this along with my re-vamped IC ...the good news being that the IC had not been damaged by any debris! They commented that it was a good job that I had stopped almost immediately on hearing the howling noise! All in all my local garage tried to keep the labour cost down to a minimum for me... but did say that removing the damaged turbo had been a fairly hard job! Anyway to cut a long story short total cost came to £980! I think I came out of this not too bad as other turbo damage permutations... i.e. IC damage..etc could have been a lot more expensive?!! To summarise, Thank god for intuition...a good local garage (not dealer)...oh, and the AA!! Regards, Steve

ok turbo even small one is s subject of speculation by the workshop -- they always see who is the owner and how to earn money from nothing. and as usual the owner can not contradict to claim the labor cost or so.

as visible on the photo you have been having a bearing issue or lack of sufficient lubrication leading to an extensive bronze bushings (bearings) wear down.. and one day the vanes start to work as chisel removing AL ply from inducer or suction case. a character traces on the vanes edges are well visible. yes the cheapest way is to change turbo as unit assly, but to remain yours for repair !!! for future use, subject you will not hate the car.

did say that removing the damaged turbo had been a fairly hard job -- starting from that they start to rise the final price matey.

when seen you can evaluate how many bolts fix the turbo -- they are several and can not cost like this.

I deduce from your comments Igor that you think I got 'ripped off' for the cost of this turbo replacement and repair? Well here are a few points that I forgot to mention…. all bearing in mind that I am NO mechanic and don't profess to be, I was a combat soldier for 23 years and a mechanic would probably find it hard to do the trade that I chose?!!

Anyway....the local (backstreet) garage owner/mechanic is a friend of mine (not expecting 'mates rates' here!) and gave me all the non committal options open to me.. the car upto the turbo going had completed 110.000 miles so there was a good probability that something like this was imminent?

I had quotes from specialist turbo dealers who were quoting £2000 all in...etc...some were asking £120 + just to find out what had happened and to diagnose the problem!

Overall I am very happy with the results..the car is running smooth and 'sweet' and I am not suffering the minor hesitations and dead spots that I used to get when driving, the car even seems to be a bit more economical!

He gave me a 2 year guarantee on the work and the turbo so a bit of 'piece of mind' their!

All-in-all I think he was very fair with me regarding this cost, I don’t expect something for nothing and the man is in business after all!!

if you're satisfied with the final outcome -- it is something.

do not utilize an old turbo but have it overhauled and keep as spare unit.

Im new to this furom i have a problem of my rav4 xtr 2005 desiel with 42789 miles now. Ive notice my ic or intercooler have oil in it and it came from the big rubber pipe/hose of my turbo side going to the ic. As ive known this hose only air passes in it goin to ic. Can any one give me an idea why there is oil in the intercooler? And can give me any solution? Thanks

hi mateyok -- you have an issue with an oil seal ring on the turbo shaft.Besides -- in such a way - you should check with the shaft play on radial/axis directions.I am inclined due to shaft bearings wear down -- the shaft plays more and some oil goes thru this sealing ring towards of intake side and after in intercooler.regards / Igor

no no -- save your pocket -- just check with repair kits for the same turbo that consists of all consumables.The only matter is to check with shaft journals dias to be in limits when assembled.regards / Igor

even though you do not deal with turbos -- i suggest the best way is to visit specialized turbo workshop to complete turbo reconditioning.

your task is to undo turbo unit and have your car idled for some time.
