heres the reply I have just recieved from the Toyota garage 40 mins from my house. Its a good start anyway

Thanks for the recent enquiry, with reference to the run flat tyre system it needs to be changed at a Toyota main dealership as it uses a special Bridgestone run flat system, its a combination of a Bridgestone tyre and inner support ring.

We are the only Toyota main dealer within the North East that has the machine able to carry out the task of replacing a run flat tyre.

Complete price of 1 run flat tyre is £215.00 that's the full price, including fitting, labour and VAT

We keep a regular supply of tyres and we only require 1 days notice for booking a waiting appointment, on average it takes 1 hour to replace 2 tyres...as a Toyota centre I cannot recommend that normal tyres should be fitted, nor' can I advise that aftermarket wheels are put on instead, however as the driver of the vehicle it is entirely up to you what wheel and tyre combination you put not he vehicle.

As you have already suggested, the warning light for 'low tyre pressure' will remain on, we are unable to disable this with our systems as the vehicle is trying to pick up the digital readings from the valves fitted to standard tyres and wheels. If you drive with a puncture the inner ring will be damaged, its there to stop the tyre from coming off the rim, best thing I can suggest in that situation is phone for recovery, its what I advise 99.9% of my customers with Rav 4 T180 and SR180 vehicles...

Inner rings are approx 100+vat but obviously no extra labour to fit.

There was wan issue about 3/4 weeks ago where Bridgestone UK had ran out of stock, reason been alot of tyres got damaged over the worse snow period and there was high demand for the tyres, however, Bridgestone and Toyota UK have addressed this issue and put processes in place if this was ever to happen again.

all the best

See photo, you will lose about 20% of your boot space bit well worth it

100_0802.jpg

Well, I'm so concerned about getting punctures, that I think we should be carrying at least TWO spares not one. ;). So, I've addressed my concerns :)

Here's an alternative solution. I'm not knocking what Dave's done. I can understand it. The spare may well take up less room that way, plus I think Dave has to cope with not very mobile relatives and associated equipment and probably needs the space to transport them.

The original idea was to produce a raised flat boot floor under which the spare wheel would sit. There were also ideas of creating a draw or magazine type of arrangement, so that the spare could sit in it and be pulled out. You never know, that could happen in future versions. :). However, it became clear that a single piece right across the boot would be very difficult to get in and out, if not impossible.

Here is version 0.5-ish. The wooden frame structure was fabricated by Anchorman a few weeks ago, on a very cold day in deepest Derbyshire. I think we both became good friends with a particular portable gas heater that day :lol:.

Not only is Anchorman a mechanical guru, he is a bit of a wood wizard too. :hokus-pokus: . (OK, that's enough sicophantic comments from me :lol:).

wheelbare2.jpg

I added the extra legs later, painted it, found some carpet that is a reasonable match for the boot and covered the top/sides.

wheelcover2.jpg

I suppose I should have rubbed that underside down a few more times and done a few more coats of paint, but, I don't think it looks too bad in the flesh (camera seems to make it look worse). Plus, it won't be seen that much. I could have covered the underside too, but wanted to keep the same theme as the Toyota lower boot storage area covers. i.e. smooth on the bottom, carpet on top.

wheelcover1.jpg

Again, to me, the carpet looks greyer in the photo than in real life.

Fits into the boot like this. It won't be everybody's cup of tea. Probably takes up too much space for some. Not sure about it not going all the way across, but, in theory another piece could be made. Plus, you can put things down in the right-hand side and they don't roll about in transit.

wheelbag1.jpg

wheelbag2.jpg

The wheel slides out reasonably easily in its bag:

wheelbag3.jpg

Just to smarten it up a bit more, I added a back cover (double side of carpet plus velcro). Obviously, there are small bits of storage space around and inside the wheel that can also be used.

wheelbag4.jpg

Phew, at least I can carry two spare wheels now. What a relief. :). Or at the very least, one spare, if, for the sake of argument I ended up driving something like an XT-R.

Note to Mr T GB, if you are watching: You see how keen we are on spare wheels? I know you don't put them on because they save you money, make the door easier to handle, less weight - better fuel economy, therefore lower road tax etc. However, I think many are willing to take that hit and I'm sure you have specification influence over the peripheral bits on the vehicles that come in from Toyota corporate, so how about a re-think?? What about at least discussing with Toyota Japan about designing a floor-pan capable of taking at least a space saver on future models? Look at the lengths we have to go to! Do you really deserve such brand loyalty?

Thanks to Anchs for making part of this possible and you also have him partly to blame for me posting this

Cheers

Thats BRILLIANT.

I would do the same only I need the boot for my Rottweiler and she has bad legs so I cant even raise the floor a bit. I guess im gonna have to just get a spare and keep it on the back seat if I go anywhere far from home. Cheers Mr T.

The RFT issues drove me mad just after I got my T180. It played on my mind if I had anywhere to go and spoilt many trips. I ended up getting Club Toyota RAC cover (check it out on Toyota's website - quite a good price) for mainland coverage and spare tyres for non-mainland trips.

Must say it does play on my mind also sometimes , mostly when im going to the airport quite a few miles away . im so happy when im within 50 miles of it :P

Apart from that i dont worry .

Good idea making it into a shelf . Where did you get the wheel bag from ?

Don,

I think you need to register this wheel selling as a business !

Regards Chris

Is there a space saver wheel available that would fit the T180??

As far as we know there isn't. Don't be tempted by the CRV spacesaver as it is the wrong bore and although it will fit on the hub it is dangerous.

I've got some 17" wheels for sale;

fleabay. They are sold for lpg conversions, when spare wheel space is filled and you want to store the spare nicely.

Well another excellent achievement to you both + a testament to Anchs woodworking skills, But with the spare neatly bagged up in its wheel bag which appears to have velcro pads to prevent it sliding about, does it really need the shelf? Not a critisism incidently, but seems a neat solution to anyone who does not posses woodworking skills  Stew P.S just put spare wheel bag in eBay search, quite a few to choose from £10-£20...

The idea was LH that you could load the boot and get the wheel out. I like it and I think you made a first class job of the trimming.

Lordy

Haven't you heard of Ancs wheel and tyre Co Ltd??? When I first got the wheels the idea was that they would make my next pair of tyres but things have changed - watch this space!!!

Hmmmm.... are three spare wheels enough for a T180? It sounds risky to me. Anyhow, fear not... I have the answer for all you paranoid T180 owners >>>>

I'm guessing you don't have a dog, pram and all the paraphinalia that goes with said pram to fit in there. That is why we bought the Rav... For the space!!!

It is a shame that Toyota have dropped the spare wheel. It does seem odd that they make a 4x4 with no spare now.

That said... Excellent job well done! I'd be proud!

How do I post a petition to have all the posts on run flat tyres posted under 1 post rather than the 2 million currently alive?

Or could it be given its own forum section (yes it can cos I know it can) -0 RAV4 RunFlat Tyres 5 door Overweight Sub-forum - or does anyone else have a better idea for a title??

Don't have a Pram??? Me RAV is me pram and I try not to throw things out of it :D. Paraphinalia?? No, I'm not a member of the armed forces that jump out of planes, so I don't have that kit either

Agreed. Having had both 4.3s with and without spare wheels, I do now actually prefer the look of the vehicle without the spare wheel. Not having the weight of the wheel on the door makes it shut with a more quality sounding clunk. I wouldn't be without the spare though. I hope they think about a space-saver for the next generation.

Had enough room for holiday stuff plus the wheel in the boot, which is when boot is normally packed solid.

That said... Excellent job well done! I'd be proud!

Fairly oldish post for you to resurrect but thanks anyway
