Rav4 Steering Problems

Hi everyone,

I've posted this in the intro area so apologies for duplicating!

I've got a 2007 Rav4 which failed it's MOT last week due to excessive give and a knocking noise from the steering column. I've been looking on the internet and it seems a TSB has been issued in the US for a very similar sounding problem. The TSB is Steering Intermediate Shaft Noise - T-SB-0318-08, would this apply to the UK as well or just USA models?

I'm taking it into the dealer tomorrow whom I brought the car but the car is 4 years old and has done 48,000 - what are the chances of negotiating the cost of the repair as it's outside of the warranty period?

Many thanks in advance

Steven

Thanks DavRav, really appreciate the speedy response!

I've printed these out and will take them along with me tomorrow.

Great forum everyone, think I'll pop in here quite a bit!

Thanks

Steven

I have just come from Toyota's garage because I had the same problem. I had the problem with the Bumper, front spring and the Plastic sheet. I paid €26.17 for the both bumpers, €1.48 for the plate and €72 for labor.

Also I have about the same miles as your car.

If you have the same problem do not worry because it can be fixed in just one day.

Hi Guys, thought I would just update you on what's happening.. I had a call from Toyota on Wednesday to confirm the problem was the Steering Intermediate Shaft, we're still discussing who's paying for that but I wont have to pay anywhere near the intial £1200 charge they mentioned - probably nearer £130 although I am pushing to pay nothing!

However, I had a call today to say that the car also has steering rack issues and parts for that could cost £800 minimum if Toyota refuse to pay anything towards this.

I am now waiting to hear on there decision but I would have thought that the 2 problems must be related??

Not related but I would also be pushing for a contribution. I would listen after the intermediate shaft has been done to see if its better.

Thanks Anchorman, I'll see what Toyota comeback with today. If they wont contribute then I'll take it away without doing the rack to see how it sounds - unless it's unsafe to drive!
