Avensis Oil Problem

i've got a 2005 plate avensis estate and just before i took it for it's last service (towards the end of the summer in 2010) the oil pressure light came on. the dealer told me there was no oil in the car and they had topped it up and asked me to bring it back for a cosumption check after 1000 miles. when i took it back they said that it had burned a little oil but was within tolerance and that the oil was half way up the dipstick (i assumed they didn't fill it to the top at the service or it would have burned half of it in 1000 miles!). when i got home, i double checked and it was indeed half way up the dipstick. anyway, about a week ago the oil pressure light came on again, and when i looked at the dipstick it was bone dry! i worked out that i have burned all the oil (from half way) in under 4000 miles

has anyone else had this problem? it's only got 68,900 miles on the clock and it's got full toyota service history. i don't think it's leaking oil as there are no stains on my drive

any ideas?

thank you

Hello mate

this issue is well known for MrT. The cure is to change a short motor(block assly).

MrT has extended warranty for this reason -- the problem is that you have to prove good service history belong to an authorised garages or right in dealership. In any case you have to be fast to catch the chance to fix it under warranty.

Cheers/Igor

That worries me, I thought this fault was fixed before 2005, I have a 2005 and it has not used a drop in a year.

The OP also has a 2.0 by the looks of it, which isn't part of the extended warranty as far as I believe.

Help please.

Hi, oil burning prob here as well. Bought the motor a few months ago 50k on clock, few minor niggles but generally ok BUT, I've noticed the oil consumption is high. Having checked older threads on this it appears there is an extended warranty (7 years or 112K). Would this be either/or , or which ever comes first?

I took the motor into my local Toyota garage and surprise surprise never even flinched when I explained the problem to them. ***** they must be aware of the problem. Anyhoo, they garage mechanic topped up the oil to the max for free and I am to return in 500 miles to see how much has been burnt off. Well I could have told them that already, the lot and some! You can even see the oil under the engine it's bl00dy everywhere. What do they thing they are gaining by this excercise? I thought I'd get a Toyota when I bought the car 5 months ago because they were supposed to be sooooo reliable. Huh, bigggggggggg mistake there. Service personel were friendly and I got a free coffee, but that ain't gonna put no gloss over the fact that I've been sold a pup and Toyota not as good as they like to portray. Ahh well, if I get nowhere with this I'll trade in and return to my lovely NISSANS. Quality cars !!!

Has anyone an answer to the 7 year / 112k miles warranty question?

I seem to be keeping this alive jsut for me, oh well it may help some else in the furture. Anyhoo, I checked the oil today, just for the hell of it and the dipstick is still on full. I wonder what oil the toyota garage put in? Be still my beating heart, I may yet still begin a love affair with toyota. Although judging by the amount of posta complaining about all the various faults with toyotas, I don't hold out much hope.

Till next time, TTFN.

Hope you get an answer to your original questions, have just encountered the problem with my Avensis 2002 Tourer in Sweden, here it's 18000 km/7 years. I'm at 14500/8.5. Toyota garage said Toyota will refuse but I'm hoping I can shame them into action.

I have had this EXACT issue with my '04 Avensis and it has taken me the best part of the last 4months to sort it out.

I first noticed the problem when I heard a knocking noise on the engine which turned out to be the crankshaft damaged due to the fact ALL the oil disappeared from the engine within a 2week period.

It took a lot of investigating, taking the car back and forth to my local dealer here in Spain, relating between them and Toyota UK (who are responsible as the car is on UK plates), but eventually months down the line got them to agree to fix the fault under the extended warranty.

They are replacing the short motor as per the above posts, but I still do not have the car back. I managed just to get this done in time as the warranty would have expired 1 week after they agreed to the work.

My service history was complete, but NOT solely with Toyota. It also had one service through a Vauxhall dealership and another through Evans Halshaw Renault (who by the way were NO help with this problem despite the fact they took 4-5K from me 6months before!)

Hope this can help someone. If anyone has any Q's feel free to drop me a message. I had to go straight to the top with this one to get anything done!

Although my engine has 90,500km (56,000mile) on it,it does not use a drop of oil, I note that my VIN No. is before the modifications.

Do I need to be concerned?

One of the mods is to increase the oil level gauge by 10mm should we do this?

That was around the mileage mine started to show issues. I would be VERY careful in keeping an eye on your oil levels, you can't do much more than that. I found that at times the oil would be fine and other times, generally when doing 70mph+, the oil would disappear very quickly.

It still amazes me that a manufacturer like Toyota made an engine that does this.

Just to finish with an update, I now have my Avensis back, fully repaired under the extended warranty by Toyota. I managed to get them to admit the fault and carry out all the work in a country outside where the car was supplied and sold, so they definitely know this is a pretty serious issue and won't quibble with it too much providing you let them know you understand the fault.

Getting our hands on the actual service bulletin Toyota produced for the solution was key to this, it is posted above should anyone else have the same problem in the future.

Overall, although it is EXTREMELY disappointing that a car with Toyota's so called reputation for build quality had this problem in the first place and although it has also cost me a fortune in phone bills and hire cars, I am pleased that they have caved and have done such a good job on the car....it's like new again!

If you are in the situation we were, know this; all is not lost!

It amazes me that they have so many condition for their engine warranty, when clearly there is a design fault, even if the engine was not looked after, there is still a design fault.

In my case I am retired and do not do a lot of miles, so by the time I am burning oil it will be over 7 years old.
