How Bright Is Too Bright?

Anybody noticed lately that far more cars appear to have headlights which are just blinding?

Honestly, I sometimes think it is my own eyes, but passengers with me have said the same thing. Who is selling these things.

I know some places sell 100w headlight bulbs, which are not road legal, but since it is legal to sell them, people are putting them in their cars for normal use, and there are not enough traffic cops to do anything.

The glare form headlights these days just ruin night time driving.

And if I see 1 more cab with some neon !Removed! glow coming from underneath, I will lose it.

Tell me about it, I could have a proper rant on this subject. I'm just in the house after a nights eye strain at the wheel, I don't think it's always the bulbs either, sometimes people have there lights set too high using the knob or dial that most vehicles are fitted with these days. Also FOG LIGHTS ( my pet hate ) are for fog, not just any fog but proper fog, when visibility is reduced down to 100 meters or so (see rule 226, highway code), not 100 miles and not if there's a light mist or even if you think they make your car look nice :ffs: :ffs:

Don't get me wrong, I know it isn't just car drivers, I couldn't tell you how many trucks I've seen with defective headlights whether it be set too high or one out or one pointing up and one down. Unprofessional.

Rant over

Dave

Dave, I'm glad it's not just me that rants about the misuse of fog lights.... IMO if you need fog lights on you probably shouldn't be out 'cos the fog is too bad!

And yes, badly adjusted headlights and HID's are a real PITA.

Keep the rant going! :yahoo:

Even worserer are the sphincti who park up temporarily ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE to drop off or pick up passengers, and don't bother to switch off their dipped beam bulbs. Nobody has taught them that an offset to the left for driving on the LEFT becomes a blinding light if you park on the right.....FURTHER EXACERBATED by the ones above who have soon to be illegal retrofit HID kits from That China, or the grandchildren of World War Two SEARCHLIGHT OPERATORS, WHOSE HEADLIGHTS ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE LUFTWAFFE....

Feel better now,

Big Kev

Paul I think this is caused a lot of the time by People who simply drive in the middle lane o the motorway and refuse to move into lane 1 even though its completely empty.....

Now there's anurra subject close to ma wee fat heart....middle lane doddlers....even when you do "undertake" (does that no mean ye drive a heubik....?) you stay in the inside lane for ages and check what Donny Doddler has done IN YOUR REAR VIEW MIRROR....has he moved into inside lane after the subtle hint....nah....catatonically proceeds onwards in middle lane. Should be shot with a ball of his own bowel waste.....

Monday Ranter Kevster.....could somebody now start a thread on what Gordon Brown did for company pension schemes ?...ah'm on a roll now....

Edit..."heubik" above has been censored as it contains the same letters as a rude word for buttocks....it's actually the vehicle that carries coffins to and from funerals....Mary Whitheouse has lots to answer for....

If the Middle Lane Morons were driving correctly and keeping left unless overtaking, it would be impossible to undertake. (Unless you were swerving trying to outrun the Police)

Our roads are too narrow and too clogged for someone to monopolise lanes 1 and 2 just because they glimpsed a truck on the horizon.

Going back to lights, I was stunned last week at how many people were driving in the near dark or dark with lights off, or faulty lights.

One car had an entire front lamp cluster out, including the turn signal. And these are cars new enough to have lamp fail warnings, even if the dark road and fast clicking from the blinker aren't notice enough.

Sorry for going off topic here WC.

I should have said that i meant on carriage ways where there can be a long trail of cars going at the legal speed limit and someone comes flying down the inside and cuts in and out the lanes, just to get ahead. This i think is happening a lot more.

tell me about it :ffs:

when commuting between carwley and guildford i had about 10 cars with these so called hid upgrades fitted without the special lenses / adjustments etc. very cool for the driver may be but for all the oncoming traffic :censor:

it's just plain stupid and dangerous imho. they blind others for their pleasure.

most were boy racers and with some snow they all stayed at home

I am old enough to remember when police would stop cyclists for having no lights/deffective lights.

Perhaps they are too busy or overworked or it creates too much paper work to challenge car drivers with deffective or ill adjusted lights.

Maybe their Chief Constables have set different priorities or perhaps they are just scared of the dark

When was the last time you saw a police car outside of a town at night?

Agreed! Yes it is probably illegal, but picture this.... Lane 1 empty, you are doing 70

Lane 2 empry except for some lane2 owners club member doing 60

Lane 3 busy

What do you do, slow down and wait for lane2 member to move over, cross behind him to join the queue in lane 3 or undertake him?

Banned subject, it sets off too many heart attacks, too many riots, and too many pensioners who got robbed would post on that thread causing the servers to fail.

I would like to ask where the unions and public servents were when GB was theiving from my pension... Now Cameron is doing the same to them it's all of a sudden not fair!!!

Prats :ffs:

This really boils my blood, with a MLM in the centre lane; bumbling along - oblivious to the queue of traffic in lane 3 to get past them

In the USA undertaking is legal on the motorway and it is a far far less stressful way to travel.

You pick a lane that's going your sort of speed, get in it, hit the cruise control and move along fine. You only change lanes once in a while which is much safer than continuously trying to keep left unless overtaking.

Travelling like this I've done 3 and even 4 hour stints and arrived not wishing to strangle every motorist that crossed my path. :censor: They have daytime speed limits of up to 85MPH in some areas, and the trucks are allowed to keep up with traffic at 70MPH which also helps ease congestion.

isnt it illegal to show a blue light unless you are classed as an emergency vehicle? there seem to be many blue lights on the road these days but not attached to what I would class as an emergency vehicle!

Just got in and picked up on this one. Imagine a place were there are no street lights at all (except in the Capital city) and the locals think it is all right to drive round with one headlight working, were dipping headlights doesn,t excist, and courtesy ot round-abouts as never exsisted!!!!!!

Yes you guessed it, it,s the Wonderful Isle of Man.

But we do have a Police Force that really do take their bat and ball home if they catch you with a defective headlight. As for the middle-lane hoggers thank goodness we don,t have any motorways.

Sorry folks, there will always be people who just wont drive as you would like them to and they are probably incapable of understanding that they are pushing up YOUR blood pressure,or care!

Bet a pound to a penny that if I passed on the left there would be an unmarked predator ready to ask me take a rest from driving and spend sometime on the hard shoulder getting acquainted.

Ain't it grand tho' when your lane is exclusive to leaving at the next junction and and you can pass on the inside

Would like to see the amendments straight from VOSA's mouth first! Could be some fine print, such as bulb sizes or requiring projection headlamps with shrouds to catch scatter.
