  1. Hi everyone, My car is a Toyota Yaris 2010, 1.33, MK2 with the engine 1NRFE. For over a year I have been having issues with the EML coming on intermittently, especially during cold temperature conditions. I've been talking with around four different mechanics, and each one says a different thing when the car is scanned and the code P0016 was coming up. By following advice from the people I contacted over time I have replaced VVT valves, Camshaft sensors, Crankshaft sensor and spark plugs but nothing changed. After replacing the timing chain the code P0016 went away but I started having P0017 now the EML is not intermittent like before, now it is ON all the time. Before removing the old timing chain it was inspected and seemed fine, not loose and after removing it and comparing it to the new one it didn't seem stretched. All parts fitted are original ones with the right OEM numbers. My last attempt was to take my car to an Auto electric specialist as I believed there could be a split wire or a damaged connector but their report states that this is not an electrical issue and could be due to the timing chain malfunction or even the camshaft itself. My car had just done 83K miles and is in good condition, drives fine and sounds fine just like before the EML started showing up. I just have no idea what it could be. Does anyone here have or had a similar experience? If so could you please share some info on how you managed to get over the issue? The picture attached shows the engine of my car when it was opened and everything seemed fine.

    Toyota Yaris Engine Management Light

Looked up the code definitions P0016 - Cam Crank correlation on the Intake camshaft P0017 - Cam Crank correlation on the exhaust camshaft Any chance you have swapped the OCVs over (in/ex), what oil are you running?? if you disconnect the intake OCV do you still get the P0016 or just OCV codes?
  3. I had the same issue a while back, EML on and P0016 stored. I decided to do absolutely nothing to fix the issue due to the age and mileage of my Mk2, and think I made the right decision. The mechanics I spoke to at the time were reluctant to change the timing chain, stating it wouldn't solve the issue. Only one mechanic provided a quote to replace the chain, tensioner, etc but the price was higher than having a replacement salvage engine supplied and fitted. I change the oil and filter every 6 months, and I've since covered several hundred miles with no issues. The EML does come on occasionally and switches itself off shortly after. The car has passed every MOT since, including one last month. The engine runs fine and still gives excellent fuel economy. If I planned to keep the car long term, I'd probably swap the engine with a salvage one from a lower mileage 2016/17 Mk3.

    Crankshaft Error Code P0016

Hello, I recently purchased a Toyota Auris 1.33 VVT-i petrol vehicle in UK. After driving it for a short distance, I noticed that the oil level was low. I changed the oil to 5W-30, but two days later, I received an error code P0016 (Crankshaft position/camshaft position, bank 1 sensor A). I have checked the OBD and there are no misfires or unusual sounds. However, the car occasionally stalls while driving, and when I press the gas pedal, it does not respond for a few seconds before regaining power. Even downshifting does not immediately resolve the issue, but after a few seconds, the car regains some power. So my question is how to get off from error P0016 ?? Thank you very much for your help and reply. I really appreciate it. I have a trip of around 500 miles coming up in four days. Do you think that's okay, or do you have any quick solutions?
  5. I'm not really sure what the issue is as the car is at 77k mileage and the engine light came up suddenly even though it drives fine. I changed the engine oil and used the preferred one Toyota says and the engine light did go away but then after a while, it came back. Just the other day, I drove the car and the light wasn't on and then came on after I returned back from the shops. The car is running fine and not hearing any noises or any difficulty starting it. Has anyone else had similar issues and knows what the fix was? Thanks

did you ever solve this issue?. I have the p0016 fault code. car runs fine , just drove to the lake district and back without any issues i replaced the cam position sensor. but the odd thing is the car runs exactly the same even if you disconnect it The idle is not rough to my ear, has good acceleration etc

Toyota Yaris - P0016 Error Code

Hey there! I've come across the error code P0016 for the crankshaft position-camshaft position correlation bank 1 sensor A. I'm hoping someone on the forum could lend a hand and advise me on what the error relates to. Do you think it's as simple as changing the sensor, and if so, where is it located? Thanks in advance for any help!

    Crankshaft Error Code P0016

    Forum search: https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/search/?q=P0016&quick=1
  9. P0016 is usually related to the OCV not reacting fast enough 5w30 may be too thick when cold

Toyota Yaris - P0016 Error Code

HI Waseem, the P0016 code indicates a problem with the connection between the crankshaft and camshaft positions. The timing chain is responsible for synchronizing the rotation of these two components. If the timing chain is worn, stretched, or damaged, it can cause the crankshaft and camshaft to be misaligned. This misalignment disrupts the timing of the engine cycle, which is detected by the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors and throws the P0016 code. A faulty CKP or CMP sensor on Bank 1 (which typically refers to the cylinder bank containing cylinder number 1) can send incorrect signals to the PCM, it's possible that damaged or loose wiring related to the crankshaft or camshaft sensors can also disrupt the signal transmission. The Diagram below shows the position of the sensor its a 2007 but the position should be the same.Hope this helps. https://www.autozone.com/diy/repair-guides/yaris-2007-camshaft-position-sensor-repair-guide-p-0996b43f81b3d975
  11. Hi Guys, My Toyota saga continues: today, after I've started the car, I've got a lot of error codes: Check the attached picture 😄 Then, I've plugged my codes reader and what I got is this: P0016 Powertrain (Crank-Cam position correlation) P0156 Powertrain (O2 sensor circuit malfunction Bank 2 sensor 2) but nothing related to TRC OFF and VSC... just the lights in dash. Then, I have cleared the error codes and did not come back... however, the trip was short, 15mins city driving. And after i stopped the engine and started it again, the TRC OFF and VSC did not come back. What shall I do now? L.E. The engine is 1AZ-FSE (2.0)
  12. Hello first time post . I have a 2007 Prius T Spirit 1.5 with 203K miles on the clock . It’s a great workhorse and has been very reliable. for a while now I have had a P0016 error code ( camshaft sensor) I have replaced both the sensors and believe that this is almost certainly a stretched timing chain / tensioner wear . Question is I am struggling to find anyone in London who knows how to replace the timing chain / tensioner and sprockets. The kits are available on line with all the parts for a reasonable price although I know the labour is going to be the major part of this exercise. The only people I have found are suggesting swapping out the whole engine which seems a bit overkill when only the timing chain needs changing. The car is stil driving well although possibly an occasional rattle from the chain. Any suggestions or is it really a case that eco omicaly it is better to swap the whole engine out just for a worn tensioner and chain?
  13. So whilst exiting a junction, (my car was just about to stall) i had the mil pop on. The code is as above, done 50k and i haven't had time to service it as only just acquired the car in the last 4 months. After a reset i went for a little drive up the road without any other problems. So i'm thinking it could just have been a glitch in the matrix, a sensor, or the chain may have stretched. Am i right in thinking it will be ok to leave? I don't think it had skipped a tooth as it would still be out now?? Regards
  14. Hi all hope you are doing well. I recently had a p0016 code. I took it to a garage and the mechanic said my timing chain must’ve stretched slightly as there was no obvious tell tell signs of timing chain is gone such as the tik tik sound when the engine is running. he advised me to get the timing chain changed. Has anyone changed their timing chain on a 1.33 auris and where did you get part from? Local parts shop don’t have it ready 😞 Do I just need the chain or the do I need to provide the sprockets aswell (the two circular objects ) my car has done 97000 miles.

    P0016 code

I recently moved from a diesel to petroleum Rav as I needed an auto. Car drives fine but a few weeks ago the engine and VSC light came on. I went to a local garage and the changed one of the sensors and it was fine till last week. It’s now showing the same code and the sensor was replaced a few days ago. Could there be another fault? The garage say they’ve fitted a new sensor and have shown me the older ones so not sure what’s going on. Thanks in advance

What Engine from the BMW is in the Verso diesel?

For many months I have commented on how noisy my diesel verso had become (BMW powered). Finally 3 weeks ago the engine light appeared. A trip to local garage dianosed fault code P0016 Camshaft/Crankshaft correlation problem. Their news was doom & gloom but cleared the fault code. 3 days later it was back. Thanks to this forum and plenty of info on the web, I knew it was going to cost a fair few quid. Car went to local Toyota to be once again diagnosed and the same fault code came up. Car fully serviced at dealer since new 2014, 68k on clock. Initial call confirmed timing chain had stretched and would call me back with prices. Armed with plenty of info off the internet I waited for the 2nd call. Then came the good news - Toyota Relax Warranty!!! Its all covered. So starting next week, the verso will have its engine removed and the timing chain etc replaced. Fingers crossed it will sound much better and go on for many more trouble free miles.

    Prius 2007 Timing chain replacement

What part of London are you in, a decent mechanic can do a timing chain it's just an engine - i would get the chain done as long as the engine is not burning any oil, some garages seem to be scared of working on hybrids P0016 is cam-crank correlation, so likely the cam chain/guides, sprockets and tensioner need doing (usually comes in a kit for sub £120) but do get a decent kit like a Febi or Blueprint item eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234649827311

Common rust area? - Mk2 sills

Is it in the exact same place on both sides, it seems that poor car has been neglected what with the P0016 and this rot once you start getting into it, you don't know what other issues you may find, seems a very odd place

    Cranking noise on Start up

that's a knackered cam chain / worn tensioner P0016 is cam crank correlation code op's sounds like it could be either
  21. 1.33

    Cranking noise on Start up

Mine does the same during the 1st start up and the noise lasts until the oil light goes out. I very occasionally get code p0016 after starting (last one 2 months ago after the noise lasted over 5 seconds). The noise is usually louder during the warmer months.

    Timing chain

Silly question, I’ve read my Haynes manual front to back and I can’t find any indication of when you change the timing chain on a Toyota Yaris vvti 1.3 2007 if there is meant to be any slack? I don’t mean loads as in about 0.5cm - 1cm when everything is TDC? ive hand cranked it 5-6 times full rotations and everything come up tdc. I’m just worried about putting all back together and still get the loose timing chain code p0016. many thanks

    Timing chain

Sorry I don’t think I was clear with my explaination, I’ve changed my timing chain as I had the p0016 code, got it checked out, and was advised the timing chain was stretched. So I’ve changed the timing chain, tensioner etc. But now it’s all back together, there seems to be a bit of slack at the top of the chain in between the twin cams. So I was wondering if a slight slack was normal or not. many thanks
  24. TL;DR: I have repeatedly had timing issues crop up in my 4Runner, even after replacing the timing chain and timing set, replacing the engine, and replacing the engine again. Am I just that unlucky, or could something else be causing the timing issue? Anyone ever deal with repeated timing issues? Anyone ever successfully fix a timing issue? Commence my tail of woe: My beloved 2007 Toyota 4Runner started showing a check engine light from time to time about a year ago. My partner and I pulled over, we got it checked out, but then...it went away. We didn't see it for a while, but then it came back. We got it checked out a few times, and most mechanics suspected the timing chain was getting old, or maybe the oil pump was failing. Either would be an expensive fix. The light went off again, so we put it off. Well, we were on another long road trip this fall, 300 miles from home, when the check engine light came back, and the oil light started flashing. Well, having long suspected timing chain + oil pump, we were very worried! We brought it to a mechanic, and he gave us the bad news: Timing chain. The computer codes said "over retarded timing," I believe. The car ran fine, as far as we could tell. No weird smells, no weird noises...but we'd known about this possible timing chain for a while, and the car had ~250,000 miles. Not wanting the engine to destroy itself, we got a hotel room and had the mechanic replace the timing chain and other parts, a whole "timing set" and the oil pump just in case. A few days later we drove away...and got the check engine light in 40 miles. Bummer. And this time we heard a weird clicking and then a bad knocking. There hadn't been a knock before! What had happened? Back to the hotel, and back to the mechanic. We left it with him and took a bus home to wait for the repair this time. Maybe they'd made a mistake because they rushed it last time? They assured us they could fix it. This time the codes said "over retarded timing" and "over advanced timing." Well...they couldn't. They said the engine was all sludged up and had thrown a rod. They told us we needed a new engine. Mod edit !!!!! Rats. This is what we wanted to avoid by getting the timing chain replaced right away! After weeks of talking with the mechanic and working our butts off to scrape some funds together, we decided to get the engine replaced. We got a junkyard engine because that's all we could afford. Still cheaper than a new car, so what choice did we have? Also we love that 4Runner. We wanted it back. The mechanic would replace our engine, but he'd transfer over our brand new timing set. A month and a half later (most of that was just us trying to figure out what on earth to do), the car was ready. We borrowed a friend's car to go retrieve ours, started driving, and...well, we made it 150 miles this time, but right after filling up, the check engine light was back again And the code was...over retarded and over advanced timing!!! WHYYYYYYYYY. Well, we weren't going back to that mechanic again. Apparently timing chains are hard to do correctly. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd like to know for sure. We got the car towed home, only to find out, well, we could still drive it, but yeah, there was something wrong with the timing, the new chain was stretched (how??), and the engine wasn't so great. So we got the engine replaced again again, by someone here at home, without anyone touching the timing chains on the "new" used engines (junkyard engine was warrantied, so we got another junkyard engine in its place). This time we drove away...no code! And the car was so quiet! Phew! We drove around casually with no issues. No big trip yet. That lasted until I washed the car. Check engine light was back again. This time the code was a bit different, and I know the number this time: P0016, cam shaft position sensor, bank A. But you know what can cause P0016? Timing. Issues. ARRGGHGHG!!!! Please, no! This code comes on, sticks around for a while, and then tends to go away on its own. Could it just be a sensor? Or has my timing chain jumped again? Could it be something else that's caused three different timing chains to jump? I think the timing set included guides and a tensioner pulley, but then I guess I got another used engine, whose timing area didn't get messed with. Am I just super unlucky? Do I have to redo the timing on my new used engine too? This is getting ridiculous. I want to save my 4Runner, guys! I'm about ready to fix the timing chain myself, if that's what's wrong again. I certainly don't have the money to pay another guy to do it wrong. 😧 Has anyone ever had a timing issue successfully fixed by a mechanic? Has anyone done it themselves? Any troubleshooting tips? I need help.

    EML problem

Hi there I’m new to the Toyota club as I’ve just turned 17 and bought one as my first car. Ive got a bit of a problem as I bought it as a fixer upper as I’m training to be a mechanic at college. It had a few problems, needed new exhaust, which was easily fixed, but I can’t shift the P0016 code, I’ve worked my way through new filters, new oil, new camshaft sensor, new crankshaft sensor, even new spark plugs, now I’m heading towards changing the oil control valve and the tiny filter, as they were dirty. But I can’t seem to find anywhere that sells the tiny filter and due to current circumstances I can’t go to my local Toyota dealer to ask what it’s called or part number, does anyone have any idea please as I’m hoping I don’t have to change my timing chain. many thanks
