Clicky Clutch Pedal

Hi folks,

Had my 1.6 valvematic sr for just over a year and covered 15k and very happy with the car.

Recently and intermittently when changing gear and depressing the clutch pedal there is a clicking sound. The best way to describe it is its the same noise you get when you crack your knuckles...

Is it just a noisy switch (linked to the ignition as the clutch has to be depressed when starting) or is it something potentially more sinister?

Additionally, the car makes an awful high pitch groan whenever reversing up a steep drive or when on a hill start in first gear.

Any pointers gratefully received...

If yours is equipped with a Start/Stop button, then the clicking probably comes from a switch on the clutch pedal. As you've already mentioned, it checks if the pedal is depressed at startup.

Hi thanks for the reply, no stop start on my sr, have to put up with a normal key! :)

Maybe it also has some switch there. Can you start it, without depressing the clutch?

There will be a switch there as I can only start the car with the clutch pedal depressed

The noise from first gear and reverse is normal. Helical gears are used in gears 2 and up as they are quieter, however they cannot transfer as much torque as flat gears, which are used is 1st and reverse, which is why they are noisy. This is in all cars, and is known as transmission whine.

Land Rover Defenders (old ones) had very shallow Helical gears, which is why they make a loud howling noise when at speed.

hi ptaurissr, ni had exactly the same noise, i took it to mr t who changed the pedal which did not cure the problem, so took it back and they changed the master cylinger which did cure it.

if its the same as the problem i had then you should be able to feel it kick slightly under ya foot, so id take it to toyota and get them to sort it if its under warranty.

i also had done around 15000/20000mls

I agree with SRsmithy... I had the same problem with my Avensis - had the master cylinder replaced under warranty and it stopped the click. Get Mr. T. to fix it... Whines in reverse are quite normal, although if you are worried by it, get Mr. T. to check it when they do your master cylinder. Dave.
