2005 Corolla Verso Radio Not Working

Hi, I've a 2005 Corolla Verso and there is a problem with the radio. Sometimes it works and sometimes the illumination goes out, it makes a noise in the Speakers and radio stops working (no audio or light, but still controllable).

I've heard this is a common problem but can't find any solution?

Any ideas?

Yes, I have noticed the same problem in the last month with my Verso. Radio works when I start the car, but within about 20-30 secs there will be a popping sound and the lights of display go and not sound comes out radio. Then part of the way through the journey it may make the same popping sound light comes on and then I have to switch off and on and sometime the radio come back and I have not issue for the rest of my journey.

It's is so unpredictable and very annoying. This issue has been flagged up on a couple of forums. There must be a solution or is it an acknowledged factory fault?

Can I ask what other people have done to get round this problem?? Or do they just live with it!

Absolutely identical problem, Toyota Corolla Verso 2004. Thanks for the link, Telmo79. I have already removed the radio over the weekend, but couldn't find any fault, so I have put it back in, it has worked exactly 1 day and the problem came back again. I will now try to fix it as Kevan Williams suggests.

Just off the phone with Toyota. I rang our local dealership and they in turn rang Toyota head office. They said (quoting almost literally): "Due to the age of the vehicle and the fact that you are the third owner, there is no goodwill from Toyota to help with fixing the problem".

I have followed the advice given on the page referenced by Telmo79, that is to resolder the legs of transistors - and it worked! I did have to ask my friend to do it though because I don't know how to solder.

Hi all,

my 2004 Corolla Verso developed the same fault and now I have taken the stereo out three times and soldered the legs on the transistors as suggested by Kevin. The radio starts working and the sound comes back for a short time. After a day or so or the sound goes again....

Can I ask all those people who tried the method, if their radios are still working. If not did you do anything further to fix the problem? any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,just found this topic.I am suffering with this problem as well. I made a lot of resoldering on main pcb but it did not help.When I make any pressure with a screwdriver around power connector it starts sounding but if I release sound goes off.

Almost all the components legs has already been resoldered! My opinion is some galvanized hole is broken.I am more than 100 holes resoldered.At the moment the radio is unmounted If I'll have any time and can pull the car out of my girl I remount the hifi and try again(10times) If I have any positive knews I let you know.

Hi all,

I had to do with same problem, radio quits or comes on with a loud 'popping' sound. Resoldered the legs of the four transistors on the heatsink (3 legs per transistor) on the print several times. This would help instantly after rebuilding and remounting of the unit but never lasted more than a few starts and always with an unpredictable behavior (same popping sound). But these parts were clearly involved with the malfunction. Now I have replaced all four transistors and this seems to work. For the last couple of days no issues whatsoever!

The heatsink is located on the pcb of the radio unit (an aluminium folded plate). To get to the transistors you need to sort of dismantle the radio (which is doable in my opinion). And have some soldering skills and a fine drill to open up the holes which in my case were still filled with solder after having removed the old transistors. I ordered replacement transistors from China (Rohm Transistor 2SA1757 A1757).

I'm very happy (for the time being, fingers crossed) with the result!

I have a Corolla Verso with the same issue with the stereo, would get a popping sound and the backlight and sound would go off, the display is still visible and the volume digits do go up and down as you turn the volume can change readio station, it doesn't accept a CD.  Most mornings first thing it will for work for a few minutes but then fail for the rest of the day.

I opened it up once and soldered the pins on the four transistors and it lasted for a day and then failed.  I then replaced all four transistors and again it lasted for a day or so and failed.

The only new development is that if I unplug the power from the stereo and wait for 10 minutes and plug it back in it then starts to work, and again fails after a short while, leads me to think its a power supply fault and maybe a faulty capacitor, I could do with some help please.  For at least me with hindsight resoldering the transistors and replacing them on the second attempt wasn't necessary as removing the power and reapplying it had the same effect.  A faulty Capacitor could causing a short and removing the power and it then losing its charges remedies this issue for a short time

Hi, my corolla has had the same radio issues, Toyota dealership were no help, although they suggested I may try a car audio shop nearby in Southampton.They were very helpful, they ordered a new fascia replacing my existing one.Part No.FP-11-11/S. This is a silver one. Also a new wiring harness is needed.Part No.PCZ-17-4. Both ordered from Autoleads. A new after market radio of your choice can now be fitted. The new fascia was about £30, the wiring harness only very little extra. May I add that the car audio shop fitted the new radio for me. My radio now also has a small storage space underneath and I now I have a radio and C.D. player that works. I hope this is a help to other Verso owners.

Hi,

Reading the above posts it does seem like all the problems relate to the radio unit, but replacement of an aftermarket one will require a new front surround and a wiring adapter, as detailed above. Also you may loose your steering wheel radio controls unless an adapter is purchased.

It is a diy job but you may find taking it to a car audio place might be worthwhile as they will be able to examine the wiring /connectors to make sure they are not faulty as well.

As well as local places like Halfords, there are several big online car radio places who also do a range of fitting adapters.
