Starting Problems And Engine Cut Out When Moving

Hi

I'm new to this, so hopefully doing it right! I'm after a bit of advice from someone techie.

I have an Avensis D4D TR on a 2008 plate with 32k miles.

Its recently started to have a problem starting - the engine makes a turning over noise but doesn't start. If I try it again a couple of times, I can usually get it to go.

Also, as I'm driving, it occassional sort of stops - the rev counter drops to nil and the car loses power, but then it starts again literally 1 second later.

I had it serviced at an independent garage and they suggested it might be air getting into the fuel system. If it is this, they said it would be expensive as the engine would have to be stripped down to get to the problem. Might be something with the injectors??

Anyone got any ideas?

Also, if this does turn out to be the problem, is it reasonable to push the Toyota dealer I bought it from (18 months ago) for a contribution towards the cost.

I'm planning to take it to the Toyota main dealer that I bought it from to see what they think - but as I'm not technically minded, I want to have a bit of information so they can't fob me off too much.

Any advice would be massively appreciated!!

Thanks

Tom

Hi this is a common fault with this model .main dealer is ur best option as there is a tsb relating to this and the vehicle will require an update of the ecm to up the target rail pressure while cranking .there is also a modified suction control valve to compliment this repair this will sort your hard starting issue but if the vehicle still stalls when driving youl require mod injectors .but before this can be done you need to check your tank unit for contamination and change your fuel filter .hope this helps

Price varies from dealer to dealer as they charge by the hour and some techs are a better at this sort of thing than others

Hi again - as an update to the problem; I took it back to Toyota today...and typically it wasn't playing up.

They said that as it seemed to start OK and there was no obvious problem, there was nothing that they could do.

They updated the software as you mentioned, but nothing else.

So far it has started each time, but it has cut out when being driven. It might be nothing, but it seems like it is losing power for a couple of seconds now rather than just a second as before.

Do you think it sounds like we need the modified suction valve? And / or the mod injectors (what are mod injectors?)?

Sorry to ask you loads of questions, but so far you have been more helpful than the people that I paid £110 to today to not solve my problem!

Thanks

Modified injectors (improved sliding performance) tell your dealer to refer to tsb eg0108t 1211
