Problems With Cold Start

Hi all,

I bought a toyota auris a few months ago, 2.0 d-4d 2007, and i came to observe a pattern which seems to be getting worse.

Basically if the car is cold, when i press the start button on the car, it will do a chug, chug noise between 10 to 20 secs everytime, i thought this was because the car was cold, but the weather is getting better and this isn't.

The car always ends up starting first time, but this never happened with any of the other cars I have had. Also this car had a new engine (due recall in 2012), which makes this whole situation more weird, since it should have nearly new injectors, spark plugs, and egr valve (if I am not mistaken about the egr valve), the new engine only has 20k.

If the car is hot, this issue does not happen at all.

Would it be worth, to take the car to toyota (the Battery is still the factory one from 2007, but i put a Battery health meter on and it seems to be ok.

Does anyone have any clues as to why this is occuring? I just think its normal for this occur when the outside temperature is above 10 C.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S.: I do press the start button twice before actually starting the car, i have tried to do this a couple times. I will make a video tomorrow to illustrate the problem better

Regards

There was no such thing as a recall to replace the engine, if it had a new engine fitted it was because the original engine was exhibiting either head gasket failure or excessive engine oil consumption, the replacement would have been a reconditioned unit called a 3/4 engine basically a fully assembled engine from sump upto cam cover but without any ancillary items such as manifolds, injectors, pas pump, ac compressor, fuel pump etc ( no spark plugs on a diesel ). So whilst you had a recon engine everything else would have been swapped over including EGR .

The cold start issues you are having are most likely caused by a faulty SCV valve fitted in the fuel pump, this requires a modified valve and software update to cure. There are posts in the Auris club relating to this, see: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/142960-starting-problems-20-d4d/

Thanks for your clarification, when i read honestjohn i was under the impression that it was a recall.

Looking at that post yes it looks like SCV valve the issues are far too similar to be anything else. Do you know where could i get hold of one of these in uk?

Google hasnt been of much help

Edit, just got off the phone with toyota and they want £300 for the part.

Toyota dealer is all I can advise as the Engine ECU should be updated with the new valve something only a Toyota dealer can do, labour time shouldn't be too expensive as the new valve and ECU reprogrammed takes 1.1 hours

Thanks again for your reply.

I have called toyota and I was quoted £300.xx for the part, and £250 labour, they also said that there is no ecu reprogramming need, or software update.... which is exactly the opposite as everyone in the forums mentioned, one of the dealers also said that without paying to do £80 to diagnose they weren't happy to do the work (not in these exact words but that was the message).

To be honest this is starting to annoy me,

If i get the same part as the new one, i shouldn't need to reprogram the ecu right, as it is a straight swap, right?

If anyone knows a dealership in the northwest willing to do this for less than £500?

The quote for labour is excessive the bulletin only allows a maximum of 1.1 hours to fit and reprogramme the ECU, the valve is modified and different to the original the software reprogrammed in conjunction with the new valve allows the car to double the cold start fuel pressure to prevent further issues.

Quote bulletin reference EG-0132T-1110

Good grief that's not right.... I just had mine done and only got charged £45+vat for labour of the ecu update...

May be a little cheaper than some others on the forum, probably because I had other work done at the same time.

I believe the correct cost is £99 labour charge.

I will check in another

toyota dealership, I have one more question, shouldn't a faulty scv

valve also after the car performance? the car only does the "chug chug"noise in the morning, rarely does it in the afternoon (usually the car stays stopped for at least 7h). And only a

couple times it didn't start first time (it was around 5C in the morning).

Wow, where is your dealer, coz the one in warrington and liverpool both gave me similar quotes...:( I guess the valve price is the usual price as other makes seem to charge the similar values.

But the labour just doesn't feel right.

I only had trouble on a cold engine.. For example left overnight.

Once it was started it would be trouble free......

Initially you will get poor cold start as the valve is slow to respond when cold, eventually the valve can start to give fault codes such as P0093 where the car believes it has a fuel leak as the valve is not controlling fuel pressures quickly enough.

Yep it'll be your scv. I'm just amazed that you're getting these prices for an ecu update....

Well the liverpool dealership did not mention any ecu update, and the one in warrington said that this was not need as they were not aware of any software update, and kept trying to get me to book for diagnosis also.

Yes my dealership said the same, and tried to get me to do diagnostics that would run into the hundreds..... I just politely told them all I wanted done was a new valve, I also gave them the new part number and Toyota service bulletin number.

But they knew there was an ecu update with this valve.... So I didn't have to fight them on the update, just fight then NOT to do any unnecessary diagnostics..

Yes that has been my tactic, but it seems if i don't go for diagnostic, or maybe extra wrok toyota dealerships charge a minimum of 3h labour.

It seems that i will have to pay for the £600 to get this fixed as I cant find a dealership that will be honest about this whole thing.

It seems that this part is not covered with the car warranty also.

Unacceptable mate. How far you from Milton Keynes.... Probably cost you lest in fuel to drive down and wait while they do it there.... Just for fun phone Milton Keynes dealership and see what they say.....

I am around 150miles away from it. but that would be £50 i diesel, so it wouldnt be a problem if it was worth it.

I phoned Steven eagell in milton keynes. And they weren't happy that i didn't wanted a diagnosis, even thought i said that a mechanic looked at it.

They said they would phone back but nothin yet, i am guessing that they wont phone also.

Thanks for your help, though:)

When I called I spoke to Tony the service manager..... He was real nice and explained that if it didn't work, I would have no comeback. But I knew it would work.

Call back and ask to speak to Tony and explain that they've just done mine, Mr Appleton's last month, with exactly the same symptoms.....

The worst that would happen is they would charge you full price for an hours labour..... £99..........
