Changing Car Battery Reminder. Keep Keys With You! I Did.

Had to change the Battery again after 8.5 years, and when actually doing the change, kept the keys in my pocket.

As soon as the negative terminal was connected, the alarm armed itself, but the doors did not lock straight away. Not wanting to trigger the alarm, I pressed the open button on the remote. Then after 30 seconds, the doors locked themselves whilst I tightened the terminals. I had to re-open the doors via the remote and open one of the doors to stop them locking again.

This is something I learned from my Vauxhall Cavalier days, as that car locked it doors if the Battery was disconnected then reconnected. I was always prepared for this.

I was miles from home where the spare key is.

This is a warning to not be caught out and stay focused. How many have been unfortunate to be locked out of their cars?

See now I'm curious. If you unlock the car with the key remote but do not open one of the doors it re-locks itself after about 30 seconds. So if you disconnect then reconnect the Battery but do not operate the key remote do the doors lock themselves? I would expect them not to.

Tempted to try it (with the keys in your pocket just in case)?

I have disconnected the Battery before, then connected without any reaction. May be there is residual damage from a few years, when I blew the fusible link. Whilst the Battery was disconnected, there is a whistle noise. It has been doing that for a while. It was the lights flashing that warned me the alarm armed itself, as soon as the Battery was connected.

Toyota still use the same alarm sound and horns, for two cars 11 years apart.

My Mk3 alarm went off when I locked it a few weeks ago, amd the Mk1 on Saturday when the Battery power dropped and I opened the door manually.

I wouldn't want them both to go off together!
