2 Year Service For My Yaris, Necessary Extras ?

My petrol yaris is having its 2 year service tomorrow. I originally booked it with Nottingham inchcape as this is my nearest dealer. They quoted me £299.33 for the service. I phoned Grantham just to see if they had any price difference and they quoted me £195.99. I asked them why Nottingham was charging over £100 more. They said that it could be brake fluid, pollen filter, and anti bacterial treatment ???. Grantham said they check all these things but would only change them if they needed. I was quite annoyed so I booked my car with Grantham instead and just cancelled with Nottingham without discussing it with them. I have had time to think now and I would like to know if these are necessary things as I have only done 10,000 miles in 2.5 years.

I would just like to know if some dealers just change these things even if not required or do they overquote so they don't alarm u with extra charges.

Thank you.

Louise

Personally I always change my brake fluid every two years although I know plenty of people who don't and have no bother. Two years is the normal recommended life of fluid after which it may have absorbed too much water which could lead to either boiling under hard prolonged braking or freezing in winter(I had that happen in an old mini once and it's not something I want to repeat) It also makes sticking brake pistons due to corrosion more likely. If your garage can actually check the condition of the fluid fair enough but I'd be happier getting it changed.

Hello Louise - welcome to Toyota Owners Club

A few points:

1. Toyota services are due every 12 month or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first. So for a vehicle which does less than 10,000 miles a year, services should be carried out every 12 months, and not using the mileage basis.

2. If your car is having its 2 year service at 2.5 years old, it is overdue for its service - which may affect the validity of its 5 year new car warranty. Note that the servicing leeway is 1 month or 1,000 miles, depending whether the service is on a time or a mileage basis.

3. Under Toyota's Fixed Price Servicing scheme, a 2 year 'Full' service costs £195, which is almost what Grantham have quoted (not sure what the additional 99p is for). See: https://www.toyota.co.uk/caring-for-your-toyota/service-and-maintenance/car-servicing.json4.

4. A brake fluid change is normally done every two years regardless of mileage, costs £39, and is additional to the service cost. So ideally Grantham should be undertaking a brake fluid change in addition to the service - which will bring their cost up to £234.

5. As you haven't checked what the cost of the Nottingham service includes, it could be a variety of combinations - example: as your car is overdue for its service, it could be the Full+ service and brake fluid change. Surely it would have been better to ask Nottingham what their cost involved, rather than Grantham.

6. Pollen filter changes are normally in addition to the service - and a pollen filter change costs £39. Checking the pollen filter isn't part of the service. I would probably say your pollen filter may well need changing as it is 2.5 years old, and you could change the pollen filter yourself to save around £20.

I bought the car in Dec 2013 when it was 7 months old. I had it serviced similar time last year which I received the reminder a week ago. I don't mind that Nottingham maybe charging the same price as Grantham just that they appear to have packaged the extras without telling me they are extras. At least Grantham are going to let me know if they need changing instead of just doing it, and that leave me the option of doing it myself or elsewhere.

... but you don't know what Nottingham have included, all you have is conjecture.

IIRC the second year service includes a brake fluid change. This is not a recommendation, but a service interval requirement. Failure to have this implemented may invalidate the warranty.

Brake fluid change isn't included within the costs of a Fixed Price Service 'Full' service, and is costed separately as a 'Maintenance Option' -

In addition to these prices your vehicle may also require Maintenance Options:

Brake Fluid £39

Automatic Transmission Fluid** From £109

Pollen Filter £39

Limited Slip Differential Oil** £55

Timing Belt** £289

Front Differential Oil** £39

Coolant Change From £65

Rear Differential Oil** From £25

Gear Oil From £39

I agree with Frosty. Our 2nd year service had the brake fluid changed as an extra. This year they offered to change it again (extra) and I advised them that it was done the previous year - shame there is nothing in the service book to cover this (unlike other makes), but I make a written note under the dealers stamp (plus keep the invoice).

Pollen filter is pretty easy to change, just needs a little patience in getting the glovebox out (https://www.carbot.org/changing-your-cabin-air-filter/)

Nope, its only a recommendation. Not requirement.

Here's the relevant pages from the service book for my 14 reg 1.3 petrol Yaris Icon:IMG.pdf

It clearly shows a full service (every 20,00 miles or two years) requires replacement of the cabin air filter, clutch fluid and brake fluid.

Has something changed?

No - nothing has changed.

However under Toyota's Fixed Price Service scheme (FPS), which the majority of UK dealers operate, the brake fluid change, cabin (pollen) filter change, and clutch fluid change are separately costed Maintenance Options, and, if required, are charged additionally to the FPS Full service. It has been this way since the introduction of the Fixed Price Service scheme in the UK.

Sounds to me like both dealers are 'right'.

If I asked for a '2 year' service without getting into the nitty gritty I'd expect them to do all the stuff recommended by Toyota.
