Hi all!, (Hoping this gets read)

Firstly let me just say this is one wicked site! it's cool i have learned things about cars i never knew before and thats always a good thing:) Anyway here's my question, which i'm asking on behalf of my father because he's about as computer literate as the dead remains of shakespeare!

The other day he traded in his 98 VW passat for a pristine 2001 Toyota Avensis VVTI. He loves his new car and he's already purchased a whole heasp of accessories however he had to draw the line at a CD player! this was because

A: IT's not the normal shape

B: he doesnt know where to get one the right shape

and C: there a really ugly cassette player in the blooming way!

So can anyone tell me which CD player he should get and a good guide for fitting it in the Avensis 2001 model. Iv'e seen the yaris instructions but it's a totally different centre console!

oh yeah what does the VVTI things mean?

Thanks The Yikes

I've got a 2001 VVTi 2 litre GLS. Cassette player in the way? Got me puzzled cos mine only has a CD player which is all I need. VVTi stands for Variable Valve Timing intelligence. It basically means that the opening and closing of the inlet and outlet valves is varied to match the conditions, ie. hard acceleration etc. Basically makes the car have more ooomph when needed but remain frugal when not.

I've a 2002 1.8 VVTi which had the standard Toyota CD/Radio and which broke down on me so replaced it with a Sony CDX-GT300 which allows me to play MP3 CDs

I can take a pic of it if you like to show you how it fits below the existing Radio (the CD unit itself was the only thing needed to be removed). There is a small gap left and right of the new unit but it's worth it to have a working stereo!

That would be fantastic mikemp, a picture would give me an idea as to how the sony unit looks and a rough idea of what i should be looking for if my father does'nt like it. Thanks a million!

Did you lose the sat nav when you fitted the new CD player? - I want to change mine but don't really want to lose the sat nav or spend a couple hundred on a tom - tom or similar

I don't have Sat Nav so I can't confirm 100% but the trip computer, clock and temperature gauge still operate normally so I'd say Sat Nav would work too. It should be independant of the CD player. I guess you'd have a problem though if you had to reinstall the software!

Sat Nav will work, but you won't hear the voice because the Sat Nav uses the same amplifiers as the CD player does. These amps are actually inside the CD player which you have removed.
