Rav4 Model Range

As this keeps coming up I thought I would do a little trawl and produce a portfolio and stars some famous motors and and a few real stonkers;

RAV 4.1 - 1994/2000

The RAV (Recreational Active Vehicle) 4.1 as the others say ran from 1994 to 2000 and came in 3 and 5 doors. It employs the 2.0l 3FSE engine in common with the MR2. This has a belt driven cam belt that must be changed at 60k. The transmission has a third lockable diff with electro/vacuum actuation. It was available with auto or 5 speed manual gearbox.

This is the frontal view (Bothwell Buyer);

And from the rear (Snowy)

And in 5 doors;

And yes, love it or hate it - special editions (Local Hero);

RAV 4.2 - 2000/2005

Then in 2000 the 4.2 was launched and was also available in 3 or 5 doors. In its original incarnation most colours were 2 tone with silver/Grey at the bottom although there were some exceptions which were monotone. They had rectangular fog and indicator lights in the front bumper. Mechanically they now used the 2.0l VVTi (Variable Valve Timing intelligent) engine which has a chain driven camshaft. This camshaft has a hydraulically operated variable timing mechanism which accounts for the name. A 2.0l diesel was also introduced which is a common rail turbocharged and intercooled arrangement. This also has a timing belt which must be changed at 60k. The transmission was changed to either an auto or 5 speed manual permanent 4WD and employed an unusual transfer box which utilizes the front diff' to avoid "tight corner braking". Some models also have a limited slip rear diff'. The 3 door NV employed the 1.8 engine and was FWD. 5 door FWD 1.8s also exist as you will see later.

Here is the 3 door viewed from the front (Bitman);

And this the 5 door. Note the bonnet scoop which is exclusive to the D4D engine (Chatman).

These are two cracking examples showing two tone and monotone colour schemes..........;

Rav4_9.jpg

........Note the shape of the headlights.

In 2004 the 4.2s were facelifted. Gone was the two tone exterior and sadly in my opinion so was the two tone interior. Various improvements were made to the specification at the time of this change. This in my humble opinion is the finest example of a 4.2 3 door on planet earth (Dutchrav)........;

..........and this the most esteemed (Uncle Bob)

Look how the headlights have changed to incorporate the indicators and round fog lights are now in the lower front bumper.

To be continued........

Clearly RAV4s are offered in slightly different configurations in different European countries. Here are some for 2008.

In Belgium, the 4.3 is available in trims labeled SX, LX (with VSC), VX (auto climate), VIP (keyless go, leather, rain-sensing wipers and full navigation), and X with the DCAT engine and run-flat tyres instead of a spare wheel.

In France, the trim levels are respectively LeCap, Life, Lounge, Clean Power (DCAT with keyless go, auto lights and wipers, a 6CD changer and reverse sensors) and Clean Power Pack Techno (leather, powered driver’s seat, reversing camera and electric sunroof). Both of these latter come with run-flat tyres.

In Spain, the trim levels are respectively Luna, Sol, Executive and Premium. The Sol has tinted rear windows, reverse sensors and climate control, and is also available in Sol Cross Sport variant, with no spare tyre but a puncture repair kit. The Executive adds electric leather seats, keyless go, auto lights and wipers, while the Premium offers the DCAT engine and tinted rear windows (and the Premium Cross Sport variant has run-flat tyres). An electric sunroof is an optional extra, but the cars are fitted with roof rails.

In Portugal, trim levels are simply RAV4, then Sol, Cross Sport (no rear wheel but puncture repair kit) and X, which offers the DCAT engine with the option of run-flat tyres (and corresponding rear door) or not. The X with the spare wheel has reversing sensors - the X with RFTs has a camera linked to the touch-screen satnav. The cars do not come with roof rails.

[i hope this helps – it’s left over from my work trying to source a DCAT with sunroof but no run-flats! Finally I got a Premium from Spain.]

All good info. Bob King posted some interesting info on the 2009 variant for Spain and it now pops up with a 150 diesel and semi-auto gearbox.

RH drive tends to be the last for launch (except Pacific Rim countries) as they have to be "euroised".

Lovely job there. Some really beautiful motor vehicles. Thought I would share a little story.

I spent three years working at a local Toyota dealership. At the back end of 2005 when the Rav 4.2 was in its demise, our dealership took delivery of I think it was 5, brand new unregistered 3 door XTRs that Toyota had left over while they had finished production. 4 of them sold but one remained, a black little number which was a lovely car but for some reason just could not find a home. It sat, and it sat until finally one day a lady came and saw and with a glint in her eye ( and a huge discount) bought it. This was in february and her proviso was that she had it registered on an 06 plate in March. So, I do believe that this was one of, if not THE last of the line, 3dr 4.2 Ravs to be registered. A month after the first of the 4.3's hit the road. Strange how a six month old car can still be a "new" car. Its a funny old game.

I wish I had taken a photo now! The lady lived in the Chester area but not one of our team has seen it since. She must have moved away. Shame.

What is a NRG?

2000: Revised RAV4 launched in SWB three-door or LWB five-door styles. Entry-level model is the 123bhp 1.8-litre front-wheel-drive NV, all others have 147bhp 2.0 engine with 4WD. NRG has bigger alloys and colour-coded body mouldings. Flagship five-door VX adds leather trim and CD changer. 2001: Turbocharged 114bhp diesel joins four-wheel-drive engine options.

This is a Pic of my RAV 4 XT3 which I think may be one of the last. I bought it new on 22 March 2006.

I think they stopped making this model.

I would have changed it this year but I wanted a three door. Alas done no longer.

I decided to keep it. It has all mod cons---a fine motor...

My wifes SWB NRG has 16"alloys,so what size alloys do the rest have?I thought they where all 16"

Most model 4.2 RAV's have 16" alloys, model 4.3 RAV's have a mixture of I beleive 16", 17" and the T180/SR180 have 18" Run flats..as all models now have and no spare tyres any more..and a can of Gunk to get you home :censor:

Not a chance......As Suzuki do the three door model and this look very similar to the older RAV 3 door...

Toyota will only make the RAV in five door trim now...But I whished we could get the 7 seat version over here....
