2.0 Engine Squeal/rattle

Hi

Question from a newbie here!

Wife has a 2001 RAV4 that for the past 6-months has a dry sounding squeal on initital start-up in the mornings. Squeal is engine speed related and sounds to me like a belt/pulley or dry bearing. Noise disppears after approx 5-mins and doesn't do it when warm.

Had the car in for its MoT recently and asked the garage to have a listen. Naturally, it never made the noise! However, the mechanic did say he had changed a belt tensioner on a RAV in the past that was making similar noises to the one I described to him.

I'm more than capable of carrying out the repair myself, but just thought I'd seek your advice for a definite answer before I stump up the cash for parts that 'might' cure the noise.

Cheers

Sounds like the Auxiliary belt on the engine...common on RAV's....Mine chirps a bit in the morning but then quietens down once worm...

Not hard to do but the sequence of pulleys is the key to these. If doing your self it is worth noting the rout the belt takes, you also need a special tool for the tension adjuster...Bets are fairly cheep and GATOR do a good one...

You did not say what your RAV is...Diesel or Petrol.....

And welcome to the TOC and the RAV4 Forum.....

I would just check the tensioner when you get the belt off. You can always add one after.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Should have said it's the 2.0 petrol version. Doh!

Before I tackle the job, just how 'special' is the special tool required for the tensioner? Wife at work in car so can't have a look myself right now!
