Swapping Rft For Regular Wheels

Has anyone tried, or does anyone know if it's possible to change the wheels on a T180 to get rid of the darling Run Flat Tyres? We were thinking of putting new wheels on - ones that use the foam stuff.

Local Toyota dealer said it would invalidate the warranty so naturally we wouldn't tell them. Would it work to take the RF wheels off, put new sensible wheels on and then when it comes to service time next year, put the RF wheels back on.

I'm assuming that the computer won't like this much - but I'm also assuming that it wouldn't like it if we rotated the wheels either.

There must be someway of getting round this RFT issue.

Anyone any ideas?

I'm absolutely amazed that nobody has done it (or admitted to doing it). I would do it within days of getting one. You could flog the others for more than the price of a new set of wheels and tyres and save a fortune on the first replacements;

......well, we know where the TPMS ECU is and we know how to disconnect an ECU, so the only other things we need are Warrington, a T180 and a very trusting T180 owner...... :D

Opps, that's now scared off any T180 owners for Saturday....................... :D.

Seriously, as I've said before on here, looking at the TPMS info/wiring diagrams, I'm fairly sure disconnecting the TPMS ECU, won't have any other effect on the vehicle systems. Then just change the wheels, if available.

It can't be that simple, can it?

As long as the rolling radius is right and the wheels are the correct hub size and PCD - yes I believe it is.

Why should this invalidate the warranty on the car? That seems a bit of a sweeping statement from them  Think they need to say what items that are normally covered under the warranty would be no longer covered.

Whilst I would love to be that trusting T180 owner with a T180 in Warrington, I'm afraid that I'm 9 months pregnant so not really available to have my car tampered with just now. What with needing to drive to hospital at short notice and all! Otherwise I'd have been all yours - seriously! Although coming to Warrington would have taken us dangerously near the Subaru garage where my other half fell in love with a suped-up Forrester ST. A damn nice car but I said "no dear, think of the extra running costs with the petrol prices and insurance."

Warranty - the vehicle would be classed as "modified" so they said it would affect my warranty. I walked out of the showroom around this point in a fit of hormonal rage so didn't stay to hear much more about how it would affect my warranty!

So since i can't make warrington and timing isn't the best for my guinea pig status, I guess I need to look at other options... Could I swop the wheels without removing the pesky TMPS? I see from the manual that it would put up a warning light... would this be the only "annoyance" do you reckon? I could live with that. Or would it affect the main computor thing and main screen on the dashboard?

At least if you have a puncture on way to hospital no need to get out & start changing wheel

Come on Daisy wheres your sense of adventure, Bothy could get you to Warrington general, quicker than any ambulance, and Anchorman can turn his hand to most things , so midwifery shouldnt pose a problem, we could have our first TOC baby and all pick names for him/her, you could be the proud mum of the first baby born in a 200mph, 3 door rav, though you would prob be comfier in a 5 door :doctor:

Yeh we'll take care of you and everybody knows that having a baby isn't half as painful as a man cold anyway - pull yourself together. Now as for this light a sticker would cover it or you only need to disconnect the unit and re-connect it when you want it back in service again as shcm suggests.

I need a word about this Subaru. If it has a big bore exhaust you will be going back to Cumbria won't you?

Seriously though, very best wishes with the baby.

Three very rare anchorkisses for you....

Errr... I'll be at Warrington with a T180 and if brought enough larger, can be very trusting... :P

On a serious note, if you were to buy 4 Brigdestone tyres of the same design (they make them with of without the run-flat option) who would know? :shutit:

Not to sure, working in the morning, Man Utd's last home game so should be busy for me, probably 2-3pm which means won't have time to clean the rav, but will probably rain anyway so W.T.Flip

I am, suitably and appropriately honored. As for letting you lot name my baby... um... maybe I'm not that trusting!

On the wheel front, I think that once baby is out in the real world, then we will be giving swopping them ago - the wheels for new wheels, not the wheels for the baby! I think we'll try a simple swop and see what happens. Then maybe see about diconnecting the TPWS unit if we need to. If we get stuck, anyone fancy a lovely weekend away in the Lakes???

I dont' mind being experimental for the purpose of Rav-kind! They could name the T180 wheel swopping practice after me or something!

As for that subaru, yes it had a stoopidly fat exhaust, I would look a right muppet driving it in our village (I'd prob get an asbo or something) but it was a v nice car and whizzy as could be. Even the 24mpg doesn't sound so bad when it's up against the Ravs £300 tyre change fee!

I'm sure I'm stating the ****ing obvious here, but I'll say it anyway.

You may not be bothered, but without the TPMS ECU disconnected, you'll get fault codes stored in the ECU (can't hear transmissions from any of the wheel valves). So, dealer would know something is up.

Take rfts off, disconnected ECU, drive about on new wheels, then put rfts back on, reconnect ecu then take to dealer, and I don't think they will be any the wiser. That's the theory anyway, having looked at the wiring info I have.

Anyway, best wishes for the immanent event Daisy

At last - somebody with the courage to rid those confounded things. This should be known as a DaizyFitz T180 variant from now on.

Keep us informed DF, oh where's my manners???

Let us know how you go on with the baby and then it would be nice to know about the DaizyFitz variant!

And with your 4 unwanted run flats, you could buy one of those 3 wheeled baby buggies, fit them to it, and at long last have a spare..

Ah-ha... this was the bit I was concerned about - that it would give the game away. I dont' know much/anything about car brains, so wasn't sure if it would store the "error" messages. If since it will then we will have to disconnect or we'll be grassed up!

Not sure now... maybe someone else will have to have the honor of beign the first to remove the stoopid wheels... I dont' know enough about these things to start disconnecting RCUs...

We'll see what happens!!

Wher there's a will there's a way!

It may store codes but you can buy a code reader and dump them yourself (£30 delivered) or get your local garage to do it.
