Audi To Toyota

Hi Guys, have just joined the site, and am looking to change motors...

Just now i have an Audi A4 Avant 2.0Tdi S-Line 07/56, now we have a 1yr old and things are getting a bit on the tight side with all his stuff you have to go to Tescos with!!!!

We have been looking at the new Rav 4 2.2 diesel, but dont know what spec to go for....

I am keen on the SR180, but then again i like the leather, sat nav and all the rest of the toys which are on the XT5.

I have been looking around on the Toyota web page and there seems to be alot of the SR180 for sale, but not alot of XT5's.

Also i see the T180 have all the spec of the XT5, but with the extra BHP.

Do you think i would be better off buying a second hand 08 T180 rather than buying a SR180 and adding all the extras i would like???

Also what colour does most people go for???

Think it will either be Black or Quarts Grey that we will go for

Please help

Doug :(

I suggest you have a read around the forum as there is one aspect of the T180 / SR180 that is almost universally disliked and has stopped many people buying ..... the Run Flat Tyres. And don't assume because you know about the BMW or Mini or Audi etc RFTs, then you know about the Toyota RFTs - whole new ball game (except in the case of the Toyota RFTs, this ball game doesn't always end up with round balls  )

Ignoring the RFT aspect, people seem to love their T180s and the SR180 does look and feel like a big downgrade (personally, I would chose a slightly used T180 over a new SR180 for the extras it has, but in actual fact would choose niether due to RFTs)

If the RFT issue puts you off the T180 or SR180, then a XT5 with a Power Chip for a few hundred quid could be a good compromise to get you up the power band again?

If you had a Poll going, I would put my tick in the box marked "RAV4 XT5 D4D" (and would try and find one with a Spare Wheel on the back as well ;) ).

Colour Wise - IMO, you have identified the two best colours in the list - nice one

Oh, and welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your proposed choice of transportation :D

[First i would like to thank you for the warm welcome to the forum.

If the RFT issue is the only thing that some people are put off from buying this model, as i cant see it being a problem for myself as i dont do alot of motorway miles.

I phoned my local dealer in Aberdeen and he said i can get a SR180 in 2 weeks if i order now and 12 weeks if i want a XT4/5. But as i said i like the toys and comforts coming from Audi i dont want to go down model spec.

I think i will just keep me eyes open and see if i can get a good 08 T180 plate in grey or black with some good extras.

Is there any other little anoying things that i should look out for when i am buying second hand???

Thanks again

Doug

Hi there,

Got my XT5 at the end of March from a site called "Onlinecars" , a car broker, and saved over £3500 off list price. Had the car within 2 weeks of ordering!

I chose black, wouldn't have any other colour, but does scratch very, VERY easily!

Hi Doug

I would choose the T180 every time. I bought mine when 18 months old for £10K less than list price when new and with only 9K miles on the clock. There are definitley some second hand bargains to be had out there with the popularity of 4x4's waining. As for the RFT tyre issue I wouldnt let it put you off, If you are paying £7-10K less than you would do new, you are able to live with the RFT issue. Although I would check that your local dealers do stock them!

The T180 has everything, all the Toys plus the magnificent engine.

Check out:

All the best with whatever you choose!

hello Doug,

I cant say for the SR180, as i drive a T180 rav 4, and i find it to be a fantastic bit of kit, all the toys inc leather. As for the run flat issue, i have just had a 40k service and the dealership said i still have 10k miles left on my tyres. I understand that if you damage the inner beam by running on a flat tyre, then it becomes expensive, ive been told that as for just changing the tyre, the cost isnt that much more than a normal tyer of the same size.

hope its a help mate,

Bugsey.

Hi,

I bought my T180 new in April last year having changed this from an Audi. Mine was a A3 Sportback Quattro with the 2 litre turbo petrol FSI engine. I had all the bells and whistles on the Audi, but quite honestly prefer the T180 as it is a better all rounder and a nicer place to spend time. It made the Audi spec (even when I had paid for loads of add-ons) look spartan! We had one of the mark I Ravs and it was one of the best cars we have owned, which is why we bought this one.

Performance is different, my Audi was quick but in the real world the RAV has similar power just delivered slightly differently. It is my first diesel but the only one, when looking at the performance that I would have chosen after the Audi.

Never regretted the change (not yet anyway :D )

Hi,

I had an Audi A2 1.6. A A4 avant 1.9 130 and A3 3.2 dsg. The dealers are as good if not better than Audi although the interior is not quite as nice. I got a T180 6weks old 1500mils for 22k which has all the bells and whistles but I paid extra and got reverse sensors. The only thing I found worth checking would be leg room as it is marginal for me. The electric seat doesn't seem to go back as far as the manual ones. Other than that it does exactly what is says on the tin. In my opinion the toys in the T180 are worth it. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the club Doug.

There is a lot of dialog on this forum about RFTs (run flat tyres) and one owner has even taken the step of replacing them with standard tyres. However, when we did a poll on vehicle faults and preferences while it did seem that it would stop many owners buying a T/SR180, a significant number said they had no strong feelings about them;

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=86861

In your position I would drive both. As long as the XT5 doesn't feel too underpowered compared to the SR180 that might solve the dilemma for you. It is interesting that 100% of the T180 owners would strongly recommend one so that also tells you something!

Happy hunting and welcome to the mad house.

Keep us informed.

Regards

PS any other owners not voted, please keep them coming. The more votes we get the more representative the numbers become. Same for the 4.2s.

Thanks to all for their replys, you have given me alot to think about, but i think things are swaying towards the T180!!!

The reason for this is i am used to the power of the diesel Audi as i had it re-mapped to 195bhp and the T180 would near be the same.

Another question is what like is the boot space in the new Rav 4??? is there ample space for 2 suit cases and golf clubs??

going into Aberdeen 2moro with the Audi to the garage as ther is a clicking noise coming from the drivers wheel, then we are going to pop in and see the Toyota dealer for a test drive of the SR180 and will take it from there.

Once again thanks for all your info and will keep you posted

Cheers

Doug, do check that you can get all you need into the boot. I don't think the RAV has a very large boot. Adequate, yes, but not large. For instance, when we put our pushchair into the boot, it will take up about 3/4 of the floor space in the boot, and we end up putting shopping etc on top of the pushchair. Obviously it will depend on what pram/pushchair you have, and whether you store it lying flat or standing up etc. The other thing for families to look out for is the middle seat in the back. It is next useless!! Even the seatbelt arrangements are useless. My wife likes to sit in between our 2, but can't in the RAV!!

Doesn't look like I'm selling this car very well does it!! On the contrary, it's a great car, with a great engine. Power-wise, I dropped down from a 230bhp petrol engine, and have found the T180 more than adequate for my needs. I'm sure you'll be more than happy with it.

Bugsey, have you actually had a price out of them? I think you might be in for a shock when you come to change your tyres. I had 18" wheels on my previous car, and it cost me just over £150 a corner for tyres (michelin pilot sport 2's, iirc). I've had 1 puncture in the T180 so far, which cost me about £240 just for the tyre. That is, no new support ring, and no new valve!!

I was into the Toyota Dealer today to have a test drive of the SR180.....but the sales man did'nt have time to come and talk to us because it was the end if the month and he had a couple of cars to get out to new customers!!!

So we were just on our way out the door in disgust when a 17-18 yr old trainee sales boy came and asked if he could help...I told him i had been sitting 45min and no one had come near us so no was the answer!!!

I will now go and see if there is another dealer near and have a look round there, infact we are going to Edinburgh next week so will have a look round there.

I did'nt evan get a look in to the boot to see if the buggy fitted, so will have to wait and see

Sorry i have no remarks to report on the SR180 with my test drive which i was looking forward to this afternoon.

Will keep you posted

Cheers again

Doug

SHOCKING!

Write to the dealer principle and hope he gives his sales staff the damn good kicking they deserve!

Re the boot size, we have had buggies, mountain of baby stuff and all our holiday stuff in the boot no problems, no need to drop any seats, load above seat back level or anything else. You'll have no problems!

Hi Fujisan,

Thanks for the info on the boot size. As you can see i was not a happy bunny after waiting 45mins to have a test drive and not getting it!!!! The wife was not to pleased either, even when i spoke to the sales man mid week about coming in and test driving the SR180 and he said no problem.

This might be a stupid question but, Are all the new model Rav 4 models the same boot size or is there any differance??

I have had a look today and can't seem to find a 08 T180 near me at all, not even in Scotland..why??? :(

Suppose i will have to keep looking and hunt high n low till i see something.

Cheers again

Doug,

To the best of my knowledge all European RAV 4.3's (latest model) have the same size boot.

US models are a little different because they are LWB and 7 seat.

Might be too old for you ?

http://www.toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyota/bv/...mp;id=used_cars

Its not linking straight to the car but its at Hellensburgh Toyota.

Cheers Dave,

i did see that one, but as you say it might be a bit old....

Think i will go for the last of the T180's if i can find one. I have just been on the phone to Edinburgh and they were much more helpful and are gonig to have a look at a ware house they have for demostrators which have not been on the forcourts yet.

So hopefully he will come up with something. He said his self there is a lack of T180 in Scotland as everybody keeps a hold of them. He also told me that they have stopped making the XT5, and the best seller is the XT-R over the SR180

Anyway thanks for that spot in Helensburgh

Doug ;)

Cheers Fujisan,

Am just a bit weary in the boot size as we looked at a Rav 4.2 a couple of years ago and the only way the buggy would fit was up on it's side. So i think they have made the boot space bigger on the newer model :)

Cheers again

Doug ;)
