New Model Rav4 Spoiler

Hi guys,

Really need help here. I took my Rav 4 into a car wash and it ripped the spoiler of the car. I'm having real trouble finding a replacement and Toyota are going to charge me over 1000 to buy a new one and fit it. Any assistance on where I could get one a little cheaper would be brill. Its the spoiler with the rear brake like not the spoier that stands above the roof line.

Hi RAV4 Lover - You know those signs that say "The Management will not be held responsible for any damage" - total Bolloc ... Rubbish.

If you have a factory fitted spoiler and there is not anything in the handbook that says "Do not take your car though a car wash or bits may fly off it" then it becomes an issue of who pays for the replacement - Toyota for not fitting it properly, or the Car Wash operator for not having a proper car wash system.

I would send them both a note saying you'll take them to the small claims court (or whever the irish equivalent is) unless they agree between them to reinstate the spoiler.

Of course, if it was not factory fitted, then Toyota will not be liable.

Just my €0.02c worth :)

So its the latest version of RAV and it has ripped the spoiler off?

That thing is bolted on, can't it be repaired? Can you add any photos to look at?

The other alternative is to buy one and get a local body shop to paint it. It is very easy to fit - I can provide instructions of you wish?

Cheers

The thing is the garage has a sign up that says no spoilers but I didn't think it was a spoiler because it was level with the roof. Still waiting for their insurance company to get back to me to see if they'll pay but I'm not holding my breath. The problem now is I can't find car thats going to the dismantlers because the thing is so new. Every car that is there has been written off and guess where the damage is?

Carbon fibre spoilers are available and look good....I saw some on a USA site and are quite cheap....nowhere near £1000 or E1000 - the price of a good bottle of swally (whisky) And you don't need to paint them as they look great already.

That'll mend. Its just pulled the fixings out of the spoiler. Is the spoiler itself relatively undamaged? Can you post a close up photo of the spoiler where it has pulled off/fixing holes? Let me see as much of any damage as possible.

I've got to go to work now but I'll show you how to fix it later.

Cheers

I'm sure that would plastic weld and be repaired in no time at all

That particular spoiler is £600 plus VAT but it does come painted, thankfully

Hope you get sorted out, the question of who's fault it is etc can be difficult to determine, a sign up saying "No spoilers" would not wash in court (pun intended) BUT you would have to prove the machinary was faulty etc etc and can be hard to prove. There is nothing like sending a letter to the owner of the car wash asking for a suitable repair to be made at his expense, might make him pay up....maybe

Kingo

Don't worry about the cracks.

Remove the fixings by following items 2 - 5 in this document;

http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/legacy/To...39-X0471-AB.pdf

Don't forget one is under a rubber grommet in the middle.

DO NOT MIX THEM UP. KEEP THEM TO THEIR RESPECTIVE POSITION.

With the broken nuts off just try them in the spoiler. Don't allow the nut to drop inside the spoiler but they should be a near perfect fit in the hole they came from. Use a pencil or marker pen to put a witness mark from the broken piece to the body of the spoiler so that you can easily locate them after. Now get some Araldite 2 part epoxy resin. Mix some up (only a teaspoon full!) and carefully glue them into place and run a bit into the cracks.

Leave the spoiler overnight and if necessary prop it upright to stop the nuts falling out (or in).

After an overnight stand fix the spoiler on and all the trim.

Obviously I cannot see the outside of the spoiler (because you never showed me a photo!!!) but if it is too bad to repair, I am coming to Dublin next week and will collect it for you if it saves you the postage (I am going to Kingo's anyway).

If you are not confident to fit it, I will do it for you (it only takes a few minutes) but let me know as I will bring a few tools. You will have to meet me somewhere.

I would have a damn good go at fixing it first if I were you - you have nothing to lose.

Let me know.

Regards
