Rear Parking Sensors

I have a '58 TR Avensis estate 2.0 D4D - great and happy with it, including the extra bluetooth and DAB radio the previous owner (Toyota for 6 months!) had fitted, but I wish they had put rear parking sensors on it.

Don't get me wrong, I can drive OK  but my other Avensis estate did pick up a couple of dings from reversing, so I'm thinking of having the local dealer fit them to this car. I think they are a bit over 300 quid to supply and fit.

Do they give a complete field of protection behind you from left to right and down to the ground? Reversed into a space in the main shopping centre car park in Southampton and thankfully missed the 10" concrete barrier on the ground. Would it have picked this up? Would they pick up single posts or pillars behind you?

Anyone got any experience with them??

Cheers.

:)

I'd be interested to hear about these too, as I'm quite keen on buying some for my new Avensis hatchback. Have you seen these ones? http://www.parkingdynamics.co.uk/Vehicle-S...&-Rear-Pack

I don't know how good they are, but they appear to be relatively easy to fit and not too expensive.

I got my dealer down to £140 odd on my 57 plate Avensis Tourer (& because it's a Toyota item fitted by a Toyota dealer the warranty covers it too).

They certainly aren't the best cars for rear visibility.

It emits a beep that increases in frequency the closer that you get to an obstacle - I usually find that the tone becomes continuous with about 10"-12" of space left to the obstacle.

I've had two Avensis models without them and fitted the kits to both. I currently have a T Spirit D4D 2.2 Tourer (o5) and that also has the works fitted BUT no reverse sensors. I again bought a set off eBay from a dealer I have used before. They are 4 sensors, choice of colours to match or paint and a control box with a beep beep unit that I fitted into the passenger side rear seat section and they work great. Reverse supply was picked up from the rear light cluster. Call me cheap but for £20 and a little time they work fine, and they are even colour coordinated to the Toyota silver.

Hi mate , have you got the eBay link to where you got them from as i might be interested in them. I found these after a bit of research and they are well recommended but start at £50, they are at:-

http://www.parkingsensors.co.uk/dolphin_au...ing_sensors.asp take a look and see if they look the same, dealers on eBay also sell them at this price.

Regards Pete.

The attached Toyota handbook page may explain how they work

I had the front and rear sensors fitted to my Land Cruiser and I have to say they were superb.

Take a look here at the Steelmate systems they are not cheap but they are worth it  Mine had the displays front and back and also they beeped faster the closer I got until about 30cms when the tone sounded continuously.

Maybe you can find a local stockist who can also fit them, this is what I did and the system saved my bumpers a few times :)

They are from the same guy I got mine from. I've had three sets of him now and they work well.

They were the same as this link:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Parking-Reversing-Se...%3A1%7C294%3A50

If you go to the Toyota tech site you can download the installation instructions for the Toyota version which has a template that you can use to determine exactly where on the bumper to drill. They even come with the drill bit.Total fit time for me was 2 hours of which 1 hour was in getting the back light cluster out to wire in the supply to the reverse as I couldn't find a 10mm tubular socket. The silver ones matched my car as near as makes no difference. My neighbour bought the dark grey ones for his T180 and again they match well.

Hope that all helps.

Although I hesitate to say anything is 100% reliable and foolproof,I must say that my experience from them in many cars is excellent.

Yes,they will pick up things like posts that can easily be missed visually.

Still have to keep your wits about you and use your mirrors, and also reverse slowly enough to pick up a change in the beep frequency, but they work really well.Useful for judging the distance left available to you when parking as well as picking up any nasty surprises like the 10" post you mention.

I fitted parking sensors to my previous 4 cars, its an easy mod to do. When I bought my current Rav I decided to give

a camera a go. Its quite an easy mod as well, see link -
